Season Four Former Mounts standout Ross Buckwalter shares some of his daily experiences in professional baseball as a fifth-year relief pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays' Organization |
|
In the 2007 Major League Baseball June Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays selected former Mount standout and Shippensburg grad Ross Buckwalter in the 26th round, making him one of only a handful of Ephrata High School baseball players ever to be drafted to play professional baseball. In 2008 and 2009, "Buck" shared with us some of the highs and lows of the minors as he battled through back-to-back injury-plagued seasons in Single A. In 2010, Ross endured an injury-free season in Dunedin and pitched well enough to impress the Blue Jays organization to invite him back again in 2011 where he has mentally and physically prepared himself for a break-out season. |

Well,
I got the news today that no professional baseball player likes to hear
and that was my release. I got called into the front office today upon my
arrival to camp and was told I was going to be let go. The pitching
coordinator and farm director were the staff members to discuss this with
me and they were very professional about the whole situation. They simply
told me that I needed to be in the Double-A according to my age and the
numbers I posted in High-A last year, but there simply wasn't enough
room. I knew coming into camp that Double-A was where I needed to be or
else I could be released and unfortunately I got the southern end of the
deal. I really appreciate everyone who supported me throughout my stint
with the Blue Jays and followed along with the blog. At this point, I am
not sure whether or not I will continue on with independent ball or any
other option that may come available . Obviously, if another affiliated
organization would call and want to put me in Double-A I would take that
offer, but other than that, we will see. I am leaning towards playing out
this year at some level considering I am in good shape and ready for a
season, but we will see. I suppose I will make those decisions as things
progress within the next week! Once again, thanks for all the support from
everyone!!! Buck |

Well,
I wish I had as exciting news as I did last time, but I believe that is
pretty hard to top. After pitching so well in the major league game and
being on such a high note, I was put back in my place and humbled by the
game of baseball, as I have many times before. As many of you baseball
fanatics may know, this game will bring you right back down to earth
whenever you think you've figured it out, or are on a hot streak. It sure
happened to me this past week, as I had two mediocre performances,
followed by a real bad outing. My first two outings in minor league camp
were decent, pitching 2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and striking
out 3. Both outings weren't as sharp as I would have liked, but I was
happy that my mechanics felt good and that my arm seemed very healthy. My
rough outing came today at the Phillies, playing in the Double-A game. I
started the 4th inning, giving up 2 runs, on 2 hits and a walk. The next
inning didn't get much better as I only recorded one out and allowed 4 more runs. A few of the hits were jam shots off the end of the bat, but regardless, they pushed runs across the plate. It was by far one of the worst outings I have had in a long time. My cutter seemed to be a little flat which may have been part of the problem, but other than that I thought I located the ball well and kept everything down. It just seemed to be one of those days that you need to put behind you and move forward. This definitely isn't what I was looking to do this spring, but hopefully last year's numbers and a healthy arm will still earn me a spot on a roster. Lastly, my roommate from this past year with the Dunedin Blue Jays, Dan Delucia, was released, which made for a rough day. Dan and I have built up a close relationship over the past two years since he joined the Blue Jays in 2009, and he will definitely be missed. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he pursues! It's always difficult to see one of your buddies get released, but once again, that is the nature of the business and an obstacle you have to overcome as a professional athlete! Hope all is well back home in Pennsylvania! Hope for the best! Buck |

|
Hello
everyone and welcome back to another year of my blog. I want to apologize
for the delayed start this year, as I seemed to have much more going on
this spring training. Also, I think that participating in my fourth
spring training has made me very accustom to what happens down here,
forgetting that everyone back home wonders what is occurring. This blog
has been great for everyone and I appreciate the followers and want to
thank Coach Shelley for making it happen! As for this past off season, I
once again want to thank all the people who helped me out and supported me
while I was home. The job security that I have had at Kitchen Kettle
Village for my short times home has been first class and I couldn't ask
for a better situation! Along with that, I had two great places to
workout thanks to Steffy's Concrete and the Ephrata High School baseball
team. I appreciate everyone involved for allowing me to use their
facilities, as well as the players and staff who helped me get ready for
the upcoming season. As for the baseball side of things, it has been going really well. I drove down here to Florida with my significant other Jenna on February 11th this year in order to get prepared for this Spring Training. Before I go any farther about that, I have to thank her for being a trooper on the long trip down here as we drove straight through; which took us close to 17 hours. It's not such a fun ride by yourself, and since I lost my partner Starner, who has been my co-pilot the past few years, she had some big shoes to fill and did an excellent job! Anyway, I wanted to arrive early as I have in the past so that I could put myself in the best possible position to earn another job at the end of camp. Pitchers and catchers started out on March 6th, followed by the position players a few days later. I was scheduled to have my first outing this past Tuesday for the Double-A squad, but was told that morning that I would be heading to the Major League game to be a back-up; as I have a few times this spring already. The last three times I was a back-up, I hadn't thrown and that's usually what happens unless multiple things go wrong or guys have difficult innings. I was hoping to get an opportunity one of these times, and sure enough, on Tuesday it finally happened. The starter got knocked out of the game early and a few other things happened, and soon enough the call came to the bullpen for me to get ready. I quickly warmed up and entered the game in the 9th inning with a runner on second and one out. Not only was I making my first appearance in a game this spring, but it was against the hometown team, Philadelphia Phillies. I worked quickly getting a shallow fly ball to left and a strikeout to end the inning. I can't explain the adrenaline and nerves that were going through my body at that point, but it was pretty awesome!! I was glad that I went in there, threw strikes and went right after the hitters. The game is definitely different at that level, but it's still baseball and you have to throw the ball over the plate. I was glad to have that opportunity and be able to perform when I was called upon. I hope that this can carry into the rest of Spring Training and land me a roster spot somewhere within the organization. Once again I will try to keep the blog updated this year and thanks again to Coach Shelley and everyone that follows! Buck |

|
The
season has come to a sudden and abrupt end! We lost our first two playoff
games to the Tampa Yankees, getting shutout in both games. I pitched in
our final game last night, which consisted of two rain delays, multiple
pitching changes and concluding around midnight. I threw the last inning,
trailing 5-0. The first two outs came very quickly, including a fly ball
to right field and a groundout to first base. I then gave up a double to
the gap, which I have been told should have been caught, but I had a tough
time telling. I then gave up another double, followed by two walks and a
hit by pitch. The inning ended on a chopper back at me and that was it
for my night. I was getting ahead of hitters, but couldn't seem to put
them away as they kept fouling everything off and working me into full
counts. It was a difficult outing to end the season on, but overall I had
a very satisfying year and look forward to next year already. I now plan to make the drive back home to Ephrata in the next few days, get some rest for a few weeks and start the training all over again. I want to thank everyone for their support this year and following along through the blog!!! Buck |

|
Finally, one full season with a healthy arm and no problems! It feels
good to have the season under my belt without being on the disabled list
and being able to contribute on a daily basis. We had our last regular
season game on Sunday in which I pitched two scoreless innings and earned
my second win of the year. I threw the ball very well once again, giving
up no hits, fanning one batter and rolling five ground balls. It has been
a very satisfying year. I've been able to work on many things and
felt I got better as the season went along. It has definitely been a
grind, playing over 140 games (counting spring training) with only a few
days off, but I would consider it to be a very solid season for myself.
Although the regular season is over, we start a three-game series today
against the Tampa Yankees in our first round of the playoffs! Buck |
| Friday, September 3, 2010 - Day #198 |
|
I had
two back-to-back outings again this past series against the Lakeland
Flying Tigers. The first appearance was in a match-up situation in which
I came in and faced two right-handed hitters. I allowed one hit and a fly
ball to right field, before giving way to my roommate, Dan Delucia, to
face a lefty. My next outing was the very next night in a long 17-inning
game. I started the 11th inning and ended up pitching four scoreless,
allowing one hit and striking out four in a 0-0 game. It was quite
nerve-racking knowing that giving up one run ends the game, but I felt
very confident in my pitches and went right at them. We ended up scoring
in the top of the 17th, making it 1-0, but our closer ended up allowing
two runs in the bottom of the inning to lose 2-1, which was very
uncharacteristic of him. He has been pretty dominant all year and is tied
for the all-time record for saves and appearances for the Dunedin Blue
Jays. We start our last series tonight against the Tampa Yankees, who
could also be our first opponent in the playoffs starting on Tuesday! I
will probably get one more short outing to finish out the regular season
to keep me sharp before heading into the postseason! Buck |
| Sunday, August 29, 2010 - Day #193 |
|
I had
three more outings this past week, including back-to-back appearances
against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. I pitched a combined 2.2 innings,
allowing one hit and one run. My best outing was a few nights ago against
the Tigers, entering the game in the 8th, trailing 2-0. I had a quick
inning to keep the game close, and we ended up winning in the bottom of
the ninth. It isn't always fun to pitch when your team is trailing, but
very rewarding when you keep the deficit close and give the club an
opportunity to come back to win. My outing last night against the Tampa
Yankees was a little shaky. I only allowed one hit, but walked a batter
that led to a sacrifice bunt and fly ball that eventually scored him. My
fastball command was missing off the plate and I didn't feel as sharp as
usual. Hopefully, I get to bounce back here in a few days. I've pitched
three times in the past four days, which is always good. We play our last
home game tonight, before finishing the regular season up with a six-game
road swing! Buck |
| Sunday, August 22, 2010 - Day #186 |
|
I
have racked up five more innings over three outings since my rough outing
in Daytona. My latest outing came last night against the Clearwater
Threshers (Phillies). For this game, we wore purple jerseys for
our "Fight For a Cure Night" to honor those battling cancer and those who
have lost their battles with the deadly disease. I ended up having
two of my #19 jerseys purchased and took pictures with both buyers
after the game, along with signing autographs and talking with them. The
jerseys each had those who we were honoring stitched onto a patch on our
sleeve. I told the man who purchased the jersey I was wearing that
it must have been very good luck, considering I struck out the side for
the second time this year. The other buyer was a gentlemen named Anthony
Styer, who grew up in my hometown of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, is a fellow
Mountaineer alumnus, and someone who has kept in touch with me the past
few years down here in Dunedin. Once again, this was a very neat
experience that comes along with being a baseball player. And, I
want to personally thank both gentlemen for purchasing my jerseys! As for my outing, I entered the game in the 7th inning with 2 outs and runner on second. I quickly got the first batter to ground out to second to end the inning. I then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, striking out the side for the second time this year. My fastball command was really on and I threw some good cutter/sliders. It was nice to have such a good outing, considered my last outing earlier this week was a little rough. I threw three innings against the Daytona Cubs and gave up three runs on seven hits, while striking out 2. I surrendered my first homerun of the year, as well. I was hoping to go the whole season without giving one long ball up; however if I can keep it at one, I will be very satisfied. We have 13 more games left in the regular season and start the playoffs on Sept. 7th. Buck |

I had
three more outings again since last posting, increasing my total innings
in High-A ball to 30 on the year. The first two appearances were on
back-to-back days against the Palm Beach Cardinals. In the first outing,
I entered the game with a runner on second base with two outs. I got a fly
ball to center field on a first-pitch fastball to end the inning and my
work for the evening. My second outing came the very next day, which was my first time throwing consecutive days since 2008 in Lansing. I started the 6th inning with our team trailing 5-3. I ended up pitching two scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with two strikeouts. Two of my outs were hit hard, including a line drive right back at me that I caught in front of my rib cage/chest area. It was by far the hardest ball ever hit directly back at me in my baseball career. I was glad my glove was in the right spot! My latest outing came last night against the Daytona Cubs at their stadium. I started the 8th inning with the game tied 7-7. The first batter hit a bloop single to right center, followed by a sacrifice bunt that I fielded for the out at first. The next batter grounded out to our shortstop, moving the runner to third with two outs. I had the fourth batter right were I wanted him, working a 1-2 count. I tried to go with a fastball down and in, noticing how much he missed the second-pitch fastball of the sequence. I ended up spiking it into the ground. The pitch got past our catcher and the runner scored, which ended up being the winning run, leading to me getting tagged with the decision. The hitter eventually hit a single to left field and I was pulled from the game. It was one of the most frustrating outings of the year and definitely the worst possible way that runner could have scored. I would have rather given up a base hit to allow the runner to score than toss a wild pitch. Other than that, I have continued to throw the ball well and have confidence in my cutter/slider. I threw it for strikes in all three outings and continue to throw it more often. Outside of baseball, our team had a really fun golf outing this past week during one of our few off days. We played a scramble at Fox Hollow Golf Course with teams consisting of four players, ranking from A-D, A being the best. I was definitly included as a D player, but was paired up with some really good golfers, including our shortstop and two other pitchers. My performance wasn't too great until the fourth hole when I drained a 15-foot putt for birdie, putting our team 2 under par! I believe the guys were pretty pumped that their D player came through in the clutch! We ended up using 8 or 9 of my shots, which I was pretty happy about, considering I was the D player of the group. Our group ended up tying for second, finishing four under par. Other than the golf outing, the season continues to fly by, with only three weeks of the regular season left. I hope to get a handful of quality outings until then, which would put me close to the 40-inning mark! Buck |

Hey
everyone, thought I would provide the link for some pictures that were

Another week has flown by down here in Florida with a few more innings
under my belt. I was informed by my friend back home in Ephrata, Donald
Martin, that it was time for a blog update, so I want to apologize for the
delay!! The weeks seem to be flying by faster than ever this year. I
suppose it's because I have had so much to do this season off the field,
rather than just baseball. I threw once in our series against the Fort
Myers Miracle, receiving my third loss of the season. I entered the game
in the 9th inning with the score tied 1-1, one out, and a runner on
second. The first hitter flew out to center field and I struck out the
second batter to get out of the jam. I came back out for the 10th and
ended up giving up a weak base hit, followed by a sacrifice bunt, and
another base hit to give them a 3-2 lead. I ended up getting out of the
inning, however we weren't able to push one across in the bottom of the
10th, so I ended up taking the loss. Overall, I threw the ball well and
had some positive feedback from our pitching coordinator who happened to
be at the game. He was happy to see the improvement in my cutter/slider
that I have been working on all season. My more recent outing was in our last series with the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs, affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. They had an excellent stadium with one of the biggest crowds of the season in our series opener on Saturday night. I pitched in the final game of the series, which was shortened to seven innings because of a rain-out the day before. I came into the game with the bases loaded, and one out in the 5th inning, trailing 3-0. I was hoping to roll the double play ground ball to get out of the jam, but gave up a sacrifice fly to right instead, extending their lead to four runs. When i was pitching to the next batter, who was left handed, I tried to throw a cutter down and in by his back foot, however it hit the dirt and scooted past our catcher, allowing the runner on third to score, making it 5-0. The last batter then flew out to left field ending the inning and my evening. Although it was a tough situation to enter the game, I threw the ball well and located my pitches, but couldn't seem to get that timely ground ball. That is the role of a sinker ball pitcher, to induce a lot of ground balls. I remember being put in those tough situations back in 2008 when I was playing for Lansing. They are pretty much win/lose situations, and are the types of situations I thrive on out of the bullpen. That is why they say having a short memory is crucial coming out of the bullpen! We got rained out today back here in Dunedin and will continue a series with the Palm Beach Cardinals tomorrow, starting a doubleheader at 5pm! One more month of the season left and then playoffs August 7th!! I still can't believe how fast this year's baseball season, and another summer, has flown by!! Buck |
| Tuesday, July 27, 2010 - Day #161 |
|
Well,
I had three more good outings since my last posting! I ended up facing
Luis Castillo in our final game against the St. Lucie Mets; entering the
game with runners on first and second with one out. He was the
first batter I had to face and I believe the only big league player I have
ever pitched to in my professional career. I pitched him into a 2-2 count
and got him to hit a high chopper to our shortstop who got the force out
at second, but was unable to turn the double play because of how weak the
ground ball was hit. I ended up getting out of the inning and going out
for one more to put up another goose egg. In my last three outings, I
have pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 0 hits, 0 runs and chalking up 5
strikeouts. My last outing was against the Bradenton Marauders, affiliate
of the Pirates. I earned my first victory of the season, entering the
game with a 3-2 lead, pitching the 5th and 6th inning of a 7 inning game.
I gave up no hits and struck out 4, including striking out the side during my second inning of work; which I believe was a first in my pro-ball career! My secondary pitches continue to get better and are helping me with my strikeout-to-walk ratio! I hope to get some more action tomorrow as we start a series with the Fort Myers Miracle, affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. I volunteered to do another community service event this morning at the American Cancer Society, along with my roommate Evan Crawford. The Cancer Center was having a send-off party for kids with cancer that were attending the R.O.C.K camp (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids). The camp is located in Orlando and includes many activities for the kids, along with a full-time medical staff to accommodate the kids as they attend the week-long camp. There were over a dozen kids being sent off to the camp. They were put on a charter bus after the brief party and were escorted by men on motorcycles that were a part of the Christian Motorcyclists Association. It was a very cool experience as we had the opportunity to sign autographs and take pictures with many of the children and their families. Hopefully, I get to do a few more events similar to this one before the season ends! Buck |
| Thursday, July 15, 2010 - Day #149 |
|
To
start this week off, I had another solid outing against the Lakeland
Tigers. I pitched a scoreless 7th inning with a 5-2 lead, earning my
fourth hold of the season. I struck out the first two batters on
well-located fastballs, followed by two hits and a ground out to end the
inning. It felt good to be out there in a close situation, and to get two
quick strikeouts and finish with a goose egg on the scoreboard! We
started a four-game series against the St. Lucie Mets last night, dropping
the opening game 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth. I didn't pitch last
night, but should have a good chance within the next three games of the
series. The Mets had Luis Castillo playing second base for the first 5
innings last night as part of a rehab assignment. It's still mind
boggling when I am on the same field as a major league star. This time,
if the opportunity arises, I could even have the chance to pitch to one.
Off the field, I had another cool community service event that I attended a few days ago. A handful of our players volunteered to attend the movie "Despicable Me" in a private showing with some of our more dedicated Jr. Blue Jay fans. As soon as we got there, I spotted a kid wearing a Penn State t-shirt and started up conversation with him. His name was Matthew and he grew up in State College and was a big PSU football fan, so we had many things to talk about. I ended up sitting with him during the movie and taking sides with him while my roommate Dan Delucia, who attended Ohio State, gave him a hard time for being a part of Nittany Lion Nation! At the end of the movie, we all hung around and signed jerseys, balls and whatever else they had for us to autograph. It was definitely another great experience that you wouldn't get with any other job. It also helped me remain aware of how much young kids look up to us as professional athletes! On a side note before closing, my brother Matt is making sure that I inform everyone of my new nickname in the bullpen, which is "Big Dutch". I am sure you can figure out where that may have come from, living in the countryside of Pennsylvania and working in the heart of the Amish country in the off-season. They also tend to get on my case for the way I talk and give me a hard time about the "Dutchified" accent that I apparently carry sometimes! The nickname seems to be sticking and I suppose its good because every time I hear it it reminds me of where I come from!!! Buck |
| Sunday, July 11, 2010 - Day #145 |
|
I had
two more outings this past week in our three-game series against the
Brevard Manatees, affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. I pitched in the
first game of the series, entering in the 8th inning, losing 7-4. I threw
the ball really well, getting two ground balls, a strikeout and one walk,
which was disappointing because it came with two outs. Besides the walk,
my sinker was working really well and I threw my cutter/slider for
strikes. My second outing came two nights later, replacing one of our
lefty relievers with 1st and 3rd with two outs. I got the ground ball
that I wanted against the right-handed hitter, but it chopped through the
hole between short and third, scoring one, giving them a 5-4 lead. I then
gave up a line drive up the middle to a left-handed hitter that scored
another run, followed by a ground out to end the inning. It was
frustrating giving up the lead and another pitcher's runs, but I did get
the ground ball in the match-up we were looking for, but unfortunately, it found a hole. I warmed up in our game today against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, in case we tied it up in the 9th inning, but we ended up losing 2-1. I should pitch again tomorrow against the Tigers because we are short a guy in the bullpen right now. It is always nice when the bullpen is getting a lot of work because you are constantly ready for that phone call, although it takes a toll on the arm at times! Buck |
| Thursday, June 24, 2010 - Day #127 |
|
First
half divisional champs!!! It all came down to the final three games
against the Tampa Yankees, who were in second place, needing one win to
clinch. We took the second game of our doubleheader on Tuesday, winning
4-0. After we clinched, we had a quick celebration outside of our locker
room, spraying and dousing each other with champagne, which was an
interesting first experience. I didn't get to pitch in the doubleheader,
but did throw yesterday in the final game of the first half. We were
leading 2-0 and I began the 8th inning, striking out two hitters and
getting a ground ball to our second baseman. I threw the ball fairly well
and was pleased with the progress of my change-up. My fastball command
wasn't as good as usual, but I was able to throw my change-up for strikes
and use my fastball when I needed to. Overall, it was a good outing in a
tight ball game, allowing me to record my third hold of the season, along
with driving my ERA back down to a more respectable number. After the game my roommate and I were able to get a free round of golf in at Lansbrook Golf Course. Needless to say, it was good I pitched well because the golf game didn't go as smooth, but was a good time as usual! We start the second half of the season today against the Daytona Cubs in a three-game series. I can't believe the season is at the halfway point. Another year is definitely flying by! February seemed like yesterday, when I was leaving a snowy Pennsylvania to come to Florida! Buck |
| Friday, June 18, 2010 - Day #121 |
|
I had
my first outing since the all-star break last night against the Daytona
Cubs. I pitched the 7th inning, with our team trailing 7-0. I threw the
ball fairly well, but didn't locate as well as I would have liked to. I
gave up two hits and one unearned run. I felt a little rusty because I
haven't thrown in so long. That was partially because I was placed on the
7-day disabled list when I got back from the break, which is something I
didn't expect. Without going into detail, we had some roster changes and
players coming off of the DL, and, with only 25 roster spots available (7
of them for relievers); they chose to put me on the disabled list during
the all-star break. As it turned out, I only missed 5 games before
being activated last night following even more roster changes. In the
end, it all worked out and was another bump in the road that I had to
hurdle over and seek some positive out of. After having surgery last year,
I am sure it didn't hurt to get some extra rest over this time. After
all, the Blue Jays could have released me, so it showed my value to them
at this point in my career. We are currently in first place and have four
games to go in the first half. If we win the first half, we automatically
make the playoffs at the end of the year. Hopefully we can put a few more
good games together and cinch up the first half title! Buck |
| Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - Day #118 |
|
It's
been quite a few days since updating the blog, but baseball has been going
really well. I have had three more outings, compiling 5.1 innings,
allowing 6 hits, 1 run and 3 strikeouts. I ended up pitching one more
inning during the Fort Myers series, before heading back for a series
against the St. Lucie Mets. During this series, I pitched three innings
in a 2-2 ballgame that ended in 13 innings. I pitched the last three
innings, giving up a run in the top of the 13th and, unfortunately,
earning my second loss of the year. Although I was tagged for the loss,
my pitches were pretty good and I was able to give us a chance to win in
the 11th and 12th, in which we had opportunities to score, but couldn't
seem to push one across. My last outing was the day before our
all-star break against the Clearwater Phillies. I entered the game
in the 8th inning with the bases loaded and two outs. We had a
comfortable lead of 10-3, so I chose to go right after the hitter,
striking him out on three pitches to get out of the jam. The ninth inning
went just as smooth, rolling two weak ground balls to our second basemen,
followed by a base hit and strikeout to end the game. It was the first
time since extended spring training that I was able to command all three
pitches for strikes, which made "pitching" much easier. The change-up is
coming around really nice and becoming a great pitch for me. I was able
to throw it for strikes when I was behind in the count, which helps keep
hitters guessing and off my fastball. Over the three day all-star break,I was fortunate enough to acquire a free plane ticket home from my friend Jennifer who I met down here in Florida. Before I say anymore, I want to personally thank her for being so generous and giving me that opportunity to see my family! I was only able to come home for a brief period of time, but it sure was nice. It was only the second time I have been home during the summer in the past four years since beginning pro-ball. It was quite a surprise for everyone, since I only let a few people know. My parents looked pretty confused when I came walking in the door, and probably a little concerned to why I was home, but very happy to see me during the baseball season. I was able to play a round of golf with my brother Matt on Saturday at Foxchase, and nearly beat him, which is significant since I've never beat him. All the golfing during extended Spring Training seemed to help my game, but wasn't quite enough, losing by 5 strokes! I made sure to fly my clubs back down to Florida with me in hopes to improve my game for the upcoming off-season and the continuing Buckwalter brother battle! For those of you who know my brother Matt, you can only imagine the hassle I get from him about never being able to beat him! I continue to remind myself that I am a beginner to golf, so it's only a matter of time! On a positive note, I did beat him on a 9th hole wager, forcing him to buy me a hot dog and drink, so that's all that matters!! Overall, my trip home was great, getting to see my family and a few friends! I forgot how great the summer weather was in PA without all the humidity like we get down here in Florida. Seeing the countryside, corn growing, and all the little things made me miss PA in the summer! Sorry for those of you who I didn't get to see while I was home, but I am sure you understand that the time was limited and family was my first priority! Hope everyone's summer is off to a great start!!! Buck |

Well,
I had two more outings this past week, once on Sunday in the second game
of our double-header against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, affiliate of the
Rays; the other on Tuesday night in our first game against the Fort Myers
Miracle, affiliate of the Twins. I pitched fairly well both times, going
a combined 2.1 innings, giving up one hit and one run. The run was given
up during my outing on Tuesday when I gave up a lead-off double down the
line, followed by two weak ground balls to the shortstop and a fly ball to
end the inning. I have been throwing the ball much better since my rough
outing last week. I started to throw a change-up, rather than a split
finger because it was becoming very inconsistent. It seems to be a very
good pitch for me that helps keep hitters off-balance rather than sitting
on my sinker, considering the sinker is the strength in my attack. Other than that, life with the Dunedin Blue Jays is going well. I finally got to move out of the hotel last week into a nice condo with another pitcher who is on the disabled list right now, Dan Delucia. Dan was a standout at Ohio State and was the only player to be a three-time captain in the Ohio State baseball program history, along with receiving 1st team Big Ten and 3rd team All-American honors while attending OSU! He was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, winner of the 2008 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and was a 2008 Big Ten Medal of Honor Finalist. Needless to say, he is a great roommate to have and has similar work habits as myself, which makes living together much better! We have two more games here in Fort Myers before heading back to Dunedin for a six-game home stand! I hope to pitch one more time this series before heading back! Buck |

Rough
outing! Last night, I pitched against the Clearwater Threshers,
entering the game in the 6th inning, trailing 6-4. I gave up two runs in
the inning, extending their lead to four. We then scored four in the
bottom of the 6th to tie the game at eight, setting myself up for a great
opportunity to hold the game there. I started the 7th inning with a lead
off walk, followed by a stolen base. I then struck out the next batter,
followed by another stolen base. I was then pulled from the game after
another RBI single. I ended up getting the loss, as we didn't score
anymore runs. It was just one of those rough outings where not much went
my way. I didn't have my command, along with my other pitches. On a much
more positive note, my velocity was 90-92 for the first time all year!
Outings like that are why you have to have a short memory in the bullpen,
because I could be up again in a day or two in a similar situation! Outside of baseball, I experienced another cool event yesterday morning. A few of the players and front office staff helped in building a house for Habitat for Humanity here in Dunedin. One of the volunteers who I was working with grew up in Pennsylvania and continued to talk with me throughout the day. We got to talking about Lancaster County and he said his favorite place to go was Shady Maple, which seems to be a common theme for people I meet who have been to eastern PA. He then was talking about the beautiful countryside and explained to me that he has visited the tourist attraction Kitchen Kettle Village where I work in the off-season! It's funny how things like that happen in my travels with baseball. It really is a small world! He took a few pictures and is planning to put them on his website that he and his wife own. They are a part of Glory Power Ministries, which help orphans in Africa. His website is called www.glorypower.org if you're interested in checking out the pictures. He said he'll post them in the next week or two! The volunteer work was another cool experience that comes with the professional baseball lifestyle! Buck |

I had
two more outings this past week with the Dunedin Blue Jays. One against
the Bradenton Pirates on Monday, and the other was Saturday night against
the Jupiter Hammerheads, affiliate of the Marlins. I threw well both
times, giving up a few hits, but rolling ground balls when I needed to.
My velocity has continued to climb, sitting 90-91 this past outing. Our
starting pitching has been doing very well so the bullpen hasn't been
getting much action lately. We played the Marlins at their Spring
Training stadium, which they share with the Cardinals. It was very cool to
play there since I didn't get the chance last year due to my injury. It
felt great to be on the road again and get accustomed to the traveling of
the minor league full season! More importantly, congratulations to the 2010 Lancaster-Lebanon League Champion Ephrata Mounts! I was first informed by an ex-teammate of the 2003 L-L Championship team, Brian Steffy, via text message that we were no longer the solo champs of the Ephrata baseball program. A little saddened at first, but not surprised considering the abundance of success the program has had since our championship in 2003! It will be great to come back home for the off-season and see another banner hanging at the indoor facility and along the fence at War Memorial Field! Once again, congratulations and enjoy it! The 2003 season and championship is still one of my greatest baseball memories and something I will never forget. To this day, I continue to talk about that season with past teammates! It will be a special memory for each and every one of you and one that will be a lasting one for the rest of your lives! Buck |

Back
at it again! There was no time wasted before I was put back into the mix
in High-A. I was the first reliever to enter the game last night,
starting the 6th inning, trailing 2-1. I started off the inning with a
strikeout, which felt great! I then surrendered a double down the line,
followed by another strikeout and fly ball to right to end the inning. I
went back out for the 7th, striking out the first hitter on a split finger
in the dirt that got past our catcher, allowing the runner to make it to
first. The next hitter squared around to bunt and I ran a fastball up and
in that caught his hand in attempt to get out of the way. I was then
pulled from the game, but our left-handed reliever, Boomer Potts, came in
and did a great job getting out of the jam. It was great being back out
on the mound under the lights on a bigger stage again. I thought I threw
the ball fairly well, maybe leaving a few pitches up in the zone and not
finishing off my cutter as I would have liked to. Other than that, it was
quite a good feeling working out with the Dunedin team again and getting
into a real season routine!!! Buck |
| Thursday, May 13, 2010 - Day #85 |
|
I
will keep this entry nice and short. I am heading back to the
Dunedin Blue Jays in High-A tomorrow and want to congratulate the Ephrata
Mounts High School baseball team on yet another Section Title. It's great
to see the Ephrata baseball team continue to build on its successes of the
past decade! Buck |
| Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - Day #83 |
|
Once
again, I had two more outings once since my last entry. I pitched on
Saturday in a 7-inning game, coming in after major leaguer Marc
Rzepczynski in the 5th inning, who was making his second rehab appearance.
He recorded the first two outs of the 5th inning before reaching his pitch
count, so I came in and got a fly ball to center field to end the inning.
I went back out for the 6th and recorded another fly ball to center field,
ground out back to myself and a strikeout to cap off my outing. We ended
up throwing a combined no-hitter to complete the 7-inning shutout. My
velocity was much better sitting 88-89, with my cutter at 86-87. My
second outing was today against the Pirates. I entered the game in the
9th inning with the score 2-0 in our favor. I was hoping for another
quick inning like my last outing, but it didn't go as well. The first
hitter got on base hit with a infield single, which was a high chopper
that our shortstop couldn't handle. The next batter hit a triple to the right center gap, followed by a broken bat bloop to center to tie the score at two all. I then got out of the inning, unfortunately getting a blown save. On the good side of things, my fastball was sitting 90, along with an 87 mph cutter. Even though the outing could have been better, I am hoping that the increase and consistency in my velocity will award me a promotion soon. Once again this past weekend, I was fortunate enough to be invited on another fishing trip with Marc Rzepczynski and a few of the big league guys. Although we didn't have as many bites this time around, we did catch a huge stingray that we thought may have been a shark after such a long fight. Also, just before nightfall, Jesse Litsch caught a 6-foot bull shark that we were able to pull onto the boat. It was definitely a very cool experience once again! A lthough extended spring training isn't where I want to be, and has been such a grind, I am very fortunate to be experiencing many of these opportunities. Buck |
| Thursday, May 6, 2010 - Day #78 |
|
I had
another quality outing yesterday against the Yankees squad, closing the
door in the 9th inning. My approach was the same as it has been all year;
pounding the strike zone with both my sinker and cutter. I threw less
than 10 pitches in the inning, recording a strikeout, a fly ball to left
field and a weak ground ball to our third baseman who made an excellent
play. Actually, the third baseman who made that play is the son of
five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner Tony Fernandez (who I'm
sure some of you remember as an all-time great shortstop for the Toronto
Blue Jays). It was again a very solid outing for me and all my fastballs
were 88, which was great to hear. I would like to be getting up to 90,
but the consistency was great to see. I will most likely throw again on
Saturday! Buck |
| Tuesday, May 4, 2010 - Day #76 |
|
I
know it has been about a week since I have blogged, but there hasn't been
much to write about. It has been a rather normal week here at
Extended Spring Training. I had two more outings last week that went
fairly well. My second outing was on Friday against the Phillies. I
entered the game in the 6th inning with runners on first and second with
one out. The hitter was a hard-hitting lefty that I coaxed to ground into
a 4-6-3 double play on a first pitch sinker. He squared the pitch up
fairly well, but it was hit directly to our second baseman for a
tailor-made double play. I cruised through the 7th inning striking out
two batters and getting a ground out, before heading back out for the 8th.
The lead-off hitter in the 8th inning laced a ball to the right center
gap for a triple. It was a decent sinker down in the zone, but caught too
much of the plate. I then got ahead on the next batter 0-2 with two very
good cutters and was unable to put him away. I left a split-finger a
little to high for the count and situation and he was able to poke it to
center field for a sacrifice fly. I then got two more quick outs to end
the inning. I was very happy with the progress of my cutter, throwing it
very well to both sides of the plate. I also threw many more strikes this
past outing, going 8 for 8 on first pitch strikes and staying ahead on
most every batter. My velocity was still 86-88, but we are beginning some
new drills this week to increase my arm speed, because they think my arm
is strong enough at this point. Outside of the field, things are going great as well! I have been able to occupy a lot of my free time and keep myself from becoming cooped up inside the hotel. My fishing trip with the big leaguers got canceled due to choppy waters last weekend, but we ended up going this past Sunday out on a boat at Apollo Beach. We ended up catching around 14 fish all together, including trout and Spanish Mackerel. Along with the fishing trip, we golfed on Saturday at a course in Disney World, called Magnolia. It was quite an eventful weekend and the major league players were quite generous in taking care of everything for me. Buck |
| Saturday, April 24, 2010 - Day #66 |
|
Another extended week over and one more outing complete! Today, I threw
against the Phillies extended squad in a seven inning game. I entered the
game in the 5th inning, down 2-1. The lead off batter hit my first pitch
sinker to the gap for a triple, who was then driven in by a broken bat
blooper up the middle. I then rolled two ground balls to end the inning,
including a 4-6-3 double play. The next inning went much better as I
rolled three straight ground balls, including two broken bats. My sinker
and cutter were very good once again and I was happy to get all ground
balls. It was a little disappointing to find out that my velocity was
down, throwing only 85-87, but it has been a long week, and I've been
incorporating a lot more throwing into my program. I long tossed twice
this week on off days, and immediately after each of my outings in hopes
to break down my arm and build it back up again! On another note, I plan to spend my day off tomorrow on a guided fishing trip with a few of the big league players that are currently rehabbing down here! I continue to make the best out of my current situation and enjoy it to the fullest!! Buck |
| Thursday, April 22, 2010 - Day #64 |
|
I
ended up throwing one inning in our game on Tuesday, which was against
Junior Team Canada. I threw the ball well once again, locating my sinker
to both sides of the plate and throwing my cutter for strikes. My outing
felt very productive because I was able to work on my cutter when I needed
to. I had two strikeouts, one hit and a ground ball to shortstop to
conclude my inning. Team Canada was comprised of many young prospects
from ages 16-18. There were probably 30-40 scouts that came to watch the
game, including Blue Jays scout Tom Burns who signed myself. I actually
felt like I was throwing in front of a crowd once again; which was nice!
I was planning on throwing tomorrow, but instead I threw a short side
today, long tossed and will be pitching again on Saturday to conclude
another week! The extended program is definitely a grind, but I am
getting a lot out of it! Buck |
| Monday, April 19, 2010 - Day #61 |
|
I had
two more outings this past week that went fairly well. My first inning of
work I gave up one run on two hits. The one hit was a ground ball through
the right side and the other was a double to the track. Although I gave
up the run, I felt I threw the ball fairly well. I may have left my
sinker up in the zone a few times, but on a positive note, my cutter
seemed to be very good. I struck a left-handed batter out with the cutter
that ran in on his hands, which is something I have been working on and
was glad to execute. My other inning was in a save situation on Saturday
against the Phillies. I entered the game winning 1-0 and coaxed three
quick ground ball outs to finish the game. I kept the ball down much
better and continued to work on my cutter, which felt very comfortable
once again. We had Sunday off, which was a nice break for my arm after
all the long tossing I have been doing. I am scheduled to throw tomorrow
against Team Canada in an exhibition-type game at our complex. Everything
else has been going very well. Although extended spring training is a
grind, I continue to stay positive; getting my work done and hoping for my
name to be called at another level! Buck |
| Monday, April 12, 2010 - Day #54 |
|
Well,
extended spring training is definitely different than starting a season
right now. Our days are pretty much the same as regular spring training,
however there is much more instruction because of all the young players
that are here. We also acquired approximately 15 Latin players from our
Dominican summer league program. They are also very young and are
beginning to learn our system. My first two outings haven't been what I
would have hoped for, but I continue to learn each day. I threw my first
inning in an intrasquad late last week and gave up two runs. Today, I
threw in our first official extended game. I pitched the 5th and 6th
inning, beginning with two strikeouts and a fly ball to centerfield. The
6th inning wasn't so pretty. Without explaining play by play, I gave up
three runs on a fair amount of hits. I was getting behind a lot of the
hitters and not finishing them off when I needed to. My location wasn't
as good in my second inning, leaving my fastball up in the zone and
missing off the plate. As of late last week, I have begun a long toss
program that will hopefully get my velocity back to where it needs to be.
On the days I throw in games, I do a quick long toss program, building up
to 150 feet, immediately after I'm done; focusing on my extension and
throwing the ball on a line. The day after my outing, I have been long
tossing to my comfort level and then taking a day off. My velocity
has been creeping up, sitting at 88-89 today. I hope to have it continue
to climb, along with making a few quality outings so that I can be placed
on a team sooner than later. Buck |
| Monday, April 5, 2010 - Day #47 |
|
Another spring training in the books! We had our last workout
yesterday morning to conclude our camp before departing to our respective
cities for the season. The final rosters came out on Friday with many
more releases and moves that were made. After having two more shutout
innings since my last blog entry, I was hoping for the best. When I
arrived Friday morning I was called in to our farm director's office,
along with our pitching coordinator and was told they were sending me to
extended spring training. Although this may sound disappointing, I got
some very good feedback from the brass of the organization and believe I
will work my way out quickly. Without trying to explain all the details,
they had very positive things to say about my pitching, as well as my
overall character, and want to keep me around. I will continue to work
hard and do what I have to do and anticipate the call up. As for now, we
have three days off, so I plan to have some relaxing time at the beach after a very good 2010 spring training!! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - Day #41 |
|
Two
more outings down, 5 more days of spring training to go! I pitched
two more times this past week. Once, against the Pirates, and the other
during an intrasquad game. I threw the ball fairly well in both of my
outings. My appearance against the Pirates could have gone better, but I
got the big outs when I needed them. I walked two guys in a row in one of
my two innings, but got a ground ball double play when I needed it most.
Yesterday, I threw the 10th inning of our intrasquad game and got three
outs in a row. I struck out the first batter on a splitter, then fielded
a bunt back at me for the second out. The last hitter grounded out to
third on a first-pitch cutter. My cutter seems to be coming along nicely
and I have a much better feel for it. My velocity on my fastball is
slightly down right now, but I am sure that will improve throughout the
season. I keep forgetting that I am still less than a year out of
surgery and need to keep that in mind. The plan is to keep up my
long-toss program to get my arm strength up and come back to were I was
before. I am still on the Dunedin High-A roster, as of now, and assume
that's where I will head to start the season. The final rosters should be
out in the next few days. I have yet to give up a run this spring,
which I am extremely happy about, and hope to carry my recent success into
the upcoming season!! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 23, 2010 - Day #34 |
|
Two
more decent outings! I threw last week against the Pirates High-A squad
for my second outing this spring and threw another scoreless inning. I
closed the game and worked fairly quick, compounding two fly balls and a
strike out. As for my third outing this spring, I threw against the
Yankees High-A team yesterday. I entered the game in the 5th inning with
a runner on first and two outs. The batter rolled over on a change up to
our first baseman to end the inning. In the 6th inning, I surrendered one
hit, two fly outs and a strike out to end the inning. I felt very
comfortable in both outings and hope to continue this through the last
week-and-a-half of spring training. There has been one day of releases
already, and there are still more to come with the large amount of guys we
have at camp this year. Unfortunately, my roommate and ex-teammate from
Shippensburg, Nate Starner, was one of the guys to be let go because of
the overload at the higher level right now. A lot of guys have been
coming down from the Major League camp and taking up roster spots at the
Double and Triple A levels. I want to wish Nate the best of luck with
whatever he pursues, whether it's more baseball, or entering the work
force. Buck |
| Wednesday, March 17, 2010 - Day #28 |
|
After
my live batting practice on Friday I had an extra day off, so I threw a
short 25 pitch side on Sunday to work on a few things and get a good feel
for my pitches. Once again I felt much more comfortable with my cutter and
was getting better spin and action on the ball. On Monday, they started
posting schedules of who was throwing in games and I was penciled in
to throw in our second game on Tuesday against the Phillies High-A team.
When I arrived on Tuesday morning, the pitching rotation changed and I was
bumped up to pitch in the Double-A game; which was great to hear. I ended
up throwing the 5th and 6th inning and was very pleased with my outing.
Besides the usual nervous feeling of being out there on the mound, I felt
very comfortable. I started my first batter with an 0-2 count, but failed
to make a quality pitch with my cutter in that situation. The cutter
stayed up in the zone, but I was still able to get the first out. After
that I pitched fairly well, keeping the ball down in the zone and making
much better pitches with my cutter. I ended up the day throwing two
shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 2 and having no walks. I
couldn't have asked for a better first outing of spring training as I
located the ball fairly well and definitely improved on my cutter. The
plan is to continue getting better each outing this spring and throw more
quality pitches in various counts as the different scenarios unfold. Buck |
| Sunday, March 14, 2010 - Day #25 |
|
Hello
everyone! I know it has been a while again since I've written
anything, but things have been pretty much the same down here at Spring
Training. We have our daily schedule of workouts, fundamentals, team work
and now games in the afternoon; starting a few days ago. The staff had us
throw our live batting practice late last week in preparation for the
upcoming games. My day to throw was on Friday, which ended up being an
extremely rainy day, so I, unfortunately, had to throw in the batting
cages. The hitters each took five pitches, but weren't able to swing
because of the confined conditions. It was difficult to get a read on how
the ball was coming out because of the deceiving nature of throwing
indoors and the enhanced sound coming from the catcher's mitt. At the end
of the session, I felt pretty good though. My fastball was sinking and I
seemed to get a better feel for my cutter. Overall, it was a great
feeling throwing with an actual hitter standing in the box without the
game pressure, yet. Buck |
| Sunday, March 7, 2010 - Day #18 |
|
Well,
I know it has been a few days since I blogged, but I figured it would be
best to wait until pitchers and catchers officially started, which was
today for the minor league camp. We started our first day by getting
a long and detailed physical for most of the morning. I was glad to
receive a good report of health and am able to participate this spring
training without any issues. After the physicals, we reported to the
spring training complex to receive the rest of our equipment and began
with a short meeting introducing all of the staff and going over some
administrative information. There have been a lot of new changes
throughout the entire Blue Jays organization, including a new general
manager. The pitching coaches, however, have all stayed the same, which I
was glad to see, considering I seem to enjoy pitching for each of them as
I progress through the system. We then had a light workout in the
afternoon consisting of fundamental reviews, taking fielding practice and
throwing the first official bullpen of spring training. I concentrated on
fastballs down in the zone and change-ups for strikes. I started throwing
a few splitters again for an out pitch, since I have struggled to stay
consistent with a cutter/slider, which should be my other dominant pitch.
It clearly needs work right now. Overall, I was very happy with my
bullpen today and am anxious to get back on the bump again. My comfort
level on the mound and with my pitch selection has increased over the last
month and they seem to be coming together very nicely. It can be tough at
times when things don't click right away when you want them to, but I am
trying to keep everything in perspective. The main thing to keep in
mind right now is that we have a long year ahead of us, and I need to
continue to work on things each and every day. I hope to get an
opportunity this year at a higher level and continue to get better from
there! Buck |
| Thursday, February 25, 2010 - Day #8 |
|
This
past week has gone fairly well. We increased our schedule to five days a
week and the conditioning has been getting progressively harder. I feel
like I am in very good shape again this year, which always makes spring
training a little easier. We started PFP's (pitchers' fielding practice)
a few days of the week, but very light. We usually do hours of PFP's
during spring training. I threw my fourth bullpen today, consisting of
all of my pitches. My sinker isn't quite were I want it to be, but I am
sure that will come around. The back of my shoulder has been a little
tender and tight this past week, but I have been getting it stretched
daily to keep it loose. On another note, I was able to meet up with my old roommate Marc Rzepczynski who I roomed with while playing for the Lansing Lugnuts. He was a guy who climbed the ranks very quickly and made his big league debut last year. Marc was able to stay in the rotation for the remainder of the season and will be competing for a starting spot in big league spring training this year. He took me out to dinner a few times and we had great discussions about his experiences in the big leagues. It was pretty cool hanging out and realizing he is still the same old guy, but playing in the major leagues. Buck |

Greetings from Dunedin, Florida and welcome back to another year of
"Bucks Blog! After being home this past off-season, I came to
learn about the large number of folks who log on to the blog. I
was indecisive about doing the blog again this year, but had heard
many comments about my continuation of the blog and was overwhelmed by
the amount of followers. I was glad to hear that so many people enjoy
reading the daily updates of my baseball experiences. I want to
thank everyone for the encouragement and support over the last few
years. I also want to thank the Ephrata High School baseball
coaching staff and players for allowing me to train at their
state-of-the-art facility and for allowing me to participate in their
off-season workouts. I would also like to thank my personal physical
therapist Brittany Gehman for taking the time out of her own schedule
throughout the off-season to help keep my body in top form. It
was very beneficial after coming off of shoulder surgery and needing
some extra treatment. Lastly, I want to thank the people at
Kitchen Kettle Village and Matt Buckwalter Trucking for the employment
opportunities they have supplied me with over the last few
off-seasons. I am very blessed to work with so many great people
and be given such a great and flexible situation for the short amount
of time I am home! On to the baseball side of things . . . I am very excited about another season. After a 2009 season with many ups and downs, I hope to have a fresh start in 2010. My roommate Nate Starner and I arrived in Florida on Sunday, February 7th after a long and wicked drive through the snow and ice of the northern states. It may have been wise to wait another week to make the trip, but both of us were eager to get to Florida and begin training outdoors again. Spring training doesn't officially start until March 6th, but we use this time in February to get used to throwing and running outside rather than in the cold and snow back home. The workouts are four days a week right now and the staff runs us through our stretching, throwing, running and lifting programs during those times. It's nice to have a structured program right now with some of the other players, rather than jumping right into Spring Training in March. I have thrown three short bullpens since I have been down here and have been really happy with the way my arm has felt. I am very optimistic about coming back stronger than ever this year and hopefully continuing to climb the levels in the minor league system. I will continue to do my best to update the blog on a daily basis and keep everyone informed of my progress. Once again, thank you very much for the support and interest that each of you has in my baseball career. It is greatly appreciated!!! Buck |
| 2009 - The Second Season |
| Friday, September 4, 2009 - Day #201 |
|
I had
my first outing back in High A last night against the Tampa Yankees. I
entered the game in the 6th inning with runners on first and second and
two outs, ahead 1-0. The first batter I faced hit a full count change up
to the left center gap that scored both runners. I got the next batter to
ground out to second base to end the inning. The 7th inning went a little
better, getting the first hitter to hit a chopper back at me, followed by
a base hit down the left field line, but our left fielder threw the runner
out at second. I ended the inning with a fly ball to center field. I was
charged with a blown save and allowed two of our starter's runners
to score, which is frustrating because he pitched so well. My velocity
was down again, throwing 87-88, but I suppose that is expected coming off
of surgery. I felt I didn't command my slider very well, but on a more
positive note, my sinker seemed to have good movement on it. Hopefully, I
get one more outing in these last three days and can come home on a
positive note. Buck |

|
Today, I finished my rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast Blue Jays,
facing the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie team. I pitched the second inning
once again, following Robert Ray in his second rehab appearance. I
started the inning by giving up a lead-off double to the left-center gap.
The next guy hit a swinging bunt back at me for an out at first, but moved
the runner to third. I ended up striking the last two guys out to end the
inning and strand the runner on third. My velocity was slightly down this
time, but I located my fastball well once again. I am getting moved back
over to High A tomorrow for the last week of their season, before coming
home for the off-season. I don't believe I will be going to instructional
league this year or playing anywhere in the fall, which I think could be
very beneficial for my arm. I hope to have a few more good outings to
close out this year and continue to get strong for next spring training!

|
Today, I had my second outing in the Gulf Coast League, pitching one
inning against the Tampa Yankees. I entered the game in the second
inning, following one of our big league rehab starters, Robert Ray.
I started the inning with a ground ball out to our second baseman, then a
fly ball out to center field, followed by a base hit to right field. I
finished the inning with a strikeout. I threw a lot of fast balls down in
the zone and thought I threw the ball pretty well again. My velocity was
up from last time, sitting 89-90, which I was happy about. I will throw
again on Monday for the Gulf Coast League in there last game of the
season, then hopefully be sent to High A in Dunedin to finish out the
season! Buck |

|
Back
on the mound! Today, I threw for the Gulf Coast Blue Jays, which is our
rookie team that I played for in 2007. It was my first game-action since
the end of April. I started the fifth inning with the score 0-0. My first
pitch back was a base hit to left field, followed by a ground ball to
third that got the out at first, but moved the runner to second. I struck
out the next batter on a slider before giving up a bloop base hit over our
second baseman's head to score the runner on second. The last guy flew
out to right field to end the inning. Unfortunately, we lost the game
1-0, giving me the loss in my first rehab appearance. I thought I threw
the ball really well for not throwing in such a long time. I located my
sinker well on both sides of the plate and threw a few decent sliders. I
am scheduled to throw another rehab inning on Friday against the Gulf
Coast Yankees. Buck |
| Monday, August 17, 2009 - Day #183 |
|
I
threw my first live batting practice today and it went really well. I
located all three of my pitches down in the zone. My sinker had very good
movement on it and the hitters were beating them into the ground. I am
scheduled to throw another live batting practice on Thursday and hopefully
will be sent back to Dunedin to finish the last two weeks of the season. Buck |
| Friday, August 14, 2009 - Day #180 |
|
The
past week has been going really well. I threw three bullpens this week
and my arm has felt great. My delivery and location of all my pitches has
been very good. Rehabbing has given me the opportunity to really work on
all my pitches. My slider has been coming around much better and I am
getting a great feel for it. I am very excited about my progress and the
way things are going at this point. The coordinators and trainers plan to
have me throw a live batting practice on Monday, followed by a simulated
game later in the week. I still hope to get some game action in the next
few weeks before the season ends. Buck |
| Thursday, August 6, 2009 - Day #172 |
|
Hey
everyone! Sorry for not updating the blog for so long again. I have
still been grinding out the rehab process. My arm has been feeling great
and I was on progress to throw my first bullpen this week, but came down
with the flu which shut me down for a few days. I completed my throwing
program last week, so missing these few days shouldn't have too much of a
negative impact. I am heading back in tomorrow and will hopefully get my
first mound action early next week. There should still be some hope of
seeing game action by the end of the year! Buck |
| Monday, July 27, 2009 - Day #162 |
|
Here
is the latest update and progress on my rehab. I threw two sets today at
105 and 115 feet. My arm has been feeling great over the past week. I
have a few more long toss days remaining before I get off the mound next
Tuesday. I am still on schedule to be game-ready by August 20th. The
pitching coordinator was in town today and said everything looks good. My
arm action and velocity seem to be on track at this point in my program.
I hope to continue on pace and get back to normal form before the end of
the season and hopefully earn an invite to a winter league! Buck |
| Monday, July 13, 2009 - Day #148 |
|
Well,
the rehab process has been going fairly well the last few weeks. I threw
for the fifth time today at 60 feet. My first set of 25 throws was a
little painful, but after I got loose, the second set felt much better.
The rehab coordinator said my throwing motion looks very good and I have
been on target with my command. The training coordinator finished up my
throwing program today and said he expects that I will be off a mound in
three weeks. I still hope to be in games by the end of August. Buck |
| Monday, July 6, 2009 - Day #141 |
|
I
finally have some encouraging news to update the blog. I started my
throwing program today, tossing 25 throws at 45 feet. My arm felt very
strong, but I still had the pinching in the front of my shoulder. The
trainer told me that he expected I would have some pain based on his
experience with other players who have had the same operation. The coach
and trainer both said that my throwing motion looked nice and smooth.
They are hoping to accelerate my program if everything goes to plan and
have me throwing in games again by mid-August. Buck |

I
thought I would share this link that has pictures of me pitching taken by
a professional photographer at one of our games in Dunedin earlier this
year. They are pretty good! I figured I would share them with everyone
since its tough to come to games in Florida and also since I'm not playing
anymore. Haha!! Hope all is well!

|
Sorry
about not updating the blog for so long as nothing has really changed
besides the rehabbing process. I have been going in for treatment six
days a week at the Bobby Mattick Training Center, which is also our main
Spring Training facility. I rehab in the mornings for about four hours,
which involves the newest laser technology, strengthening, stretching and
various other treatments. There are also many big league guys rehabbing
down here as well; Michael Barrett, Wade Miller (who is from Reading, PA)
Jesse Litsch, Travis Snider, along with a few others. Yesterday was two
weeks since the surgery and my rehab program has been going really
well. I have been staying very optimistic and happy with the way my arm
is recovering. My range of motion is coming back extremely fast and the
trainers seem to be very happy with my progress. I still have some pain
in the front of my shoulder where they shaved the bone down, but the
trainers have told me that takes the longest to heal and will continue to
be painful. I should still be on schedule to start throwing in about a
month. I can't give enough credit to the trainers I work with down here.
They have been giving me top notch treatment and pushing my shoulder to
the point where it needs to be. Wish me luck and I will continue to keep
the blog updated with the progress of my shoulder! Buck |
| Thursday, May 21, 2009 - Day #94 |
|
Today, at 9:00 AM, I had surgery on my right shoulder. The Doctor said my
labrum wasn't as bad as expected. I only had a slap tear in which he
cleaned up, rather than a full re-attachment. He then proceeded to the
front of my shoulder where he found a large amount of bursitis. He
cleared out the area containing the bursitis and shaved down my Acromion
bone. Lastly, he did an inferior capsule release, which should improve my
flexibility that has been causing most of the problems. The capsule
release is the toughest part of the procedure to come back from. On a
positive note, I will be able to throw again in 6 weeks, rather than 4
months if I would've had the full labrum repair. This all depends on how
successful the rehabilitation goes! It will obviously take a very long
time to regain my strength and velocity back, along with a full range of
motion. I plan to take this one day at a time and hope for the best! Buck |

|
Sorry
I haven't updated the blog lately. There hasn't been too many changes
since I started rehabbing again. My shoulder wasn't getting any better
and I went back to the doctor yesterday. The doctor, trainers, and I all
agreed that surgery is the only option at this point. I have had
this shoulder problem almost eight times in the past four years and its
only getting worse. I am scheduled to have surgery on Thursday. The
doctor said he plans to re-attach my labrum, do a capsule release on my
shoulder to gain more flexibility, and shave down my Acromion bone to keep
the impingement from returning. This is going to be a season-ending
surgery and I am looking at a full year until I will be back to 100%. I
wont be able to throw a baseball until September or October. Wish me luck
and I will keep the blog updated on how it goes! Buck |
| Friday, May 1, 2009 - Day #74 |
|
Well,
the bad news seems to keep rolling in right now. I saw the Orthopedic
Doctor today and he said that I have a posterior tear in my labrum. They
gave me another cortisone shot and are going to try and rehab me one last
time. The Doctor said the type of surgery I would need is hit or miss.
He said it doesn't help in my case because my shoulder capsule is very
tight. He said he would have to reattach the labrum and do a capsule
release to try and keep my flexibility. I suppose I will continue to
throw in about a week and see how it goes. This type of injury is very
difficult to come back from in pitchers, so we will see what happens! Buck |
| Thursday, April 30, 2009 - Day #73 |
|
Here
is a little update on the shoulder so far. I saw our Orthopedic Doctor on
Monday and he believes that I may have a slap tear on my labrum, along
with my impingement again. I had a dye injection and MRI yesterday to
look for any tears and evaluate the other structures of my shoulder. I
will see the Doctor on Friday to get the results and weigh the options at
that point. Hope for the best! Buck |
| Monday, April 27, 2009 - Day #70 |
|
Well,
I have some disappointing news again this year. My shoulder impingement
has come back even faster than we expected and they had to shut me down
again. I am going to see our orthopedic doctor sometime this week to get
his opinion on what we should do. I have had the impingement five times
in the past two years so we may be looking at getting arthroscopic
surgery. The way they fix the problem is by shaving off part of your
acromion bone (acromioplasty) that is located on the top of your
shoulder. By doing so, it opens up the subacromial space where your
rotator cuff is located and where the impingement occurs. We have many
guys in our system who have had this procedure done and have come back
with no problems. I really thought we would be able to maintain the
impingement with all the treatment and modifications we have made this
year, but I guess it has gotten worse over time. The last thing I want to
do is continue throwing with discomfort and run the risk of gradually
tearing my rotator cuff. This is definitely really disappointing and
frustrating after all the progression I have been making in my career so
far. I will be sure to update the blog later this week with the status of
my arm. Buck |
| Friday, April 24, 2009 - Day #67 |
|
On
Wednesday, we finished up our three-game series with Daytona. After being
man-handled and playing some poor baseball the first two games, we came
out with a win to end the series. I started the ninth inning in our last
game with a 7-3 lead. I faced two left-handed hitters, which both got
bloop hits over our shortstop's head. I pitched well to both guys,
locating my fastball and throwing a very good slider, but left two
fastballs up and away that they poked into left field. We then put our
closer in, who walked the first guy and gave up a few base hits that
scored both my runners on base. He ended up getting out of the jam and we
won the game 7-5. It was one of those frustrating nights where I pitched
well, but the numbers didn't look so good. My pitching and hitting coach
had encouraging things to say about how I threw the ball after the game,
which was good to hear. On a positive note, we had our first off-day on Thursday, which I spent all day at the beach!! I figured I would mention that, since the baseball news wasn't the best! Today, we start another series with the Clearwater Threshers! Buck |
| Monday, April 20, 2009 - Day #63 |
|
We
finished up our series yesterday in Brevard County with a 6-3 loss. I
pitched 1.1 innings yesterday, entering the game in the 7th inning with
two outs and runners on first and second. We were trailing at the time
3-1. I got behind the first batter 2-0 and gave up a line drive base hit
to center field, scoring the runner from second and advancing the runner
to third, while the hitter went to second on the throw to home plate. The
next batter singled to right field scoring both guys on second and third.
I then gave up another base hit before getting out of the inning with a
ground ball to third. The 8th inning went much better as I got a ground
ball and two fly outs to center field. It was probably my worst outing of
the year so far. I was hoping to come in and minimize the damage, but it
just wasn't my day. Pitching wise, I thought I had decent "stuff" and
location, but couldn't seem to get the ground ball that I usually get.
Overall, we went 3-3 on the road trip and are now back home for a series with Daytona. Buck |
| Friday, April 17, 2009 - Day #60 |
|
Yesterday, we finished up a three-game series with the Daytona Cubs,
sweeping them 3-0! I recorded my first hold of the year last night,
entering the game in the 6th inning with a runner on first with two outs,
leading 4-2. I rolled a ground ball to our third basemen Kevin Ahrens to
end the inning. I then pitched two scoreless innings in the 7th and 8th;
recording a strikeout and giving up a hit. It was another solid outing
that I was very pleased with! We are now starting a three-game series in
Brevard County, affiliate of the Brewers. On a side note, our hotel in Daytona was directly on the beach and our balcony over-looked the Atlantic Ocean! It wasn't too bad for our first road trip, especially after having experienced the run-down hotels in the Midwest League last year!!! Buck |
| Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - Day #57 |
|
Last
night I had my second outing of the season against the Clearwater
Threshers again. I started the 8th inning, with our team trailing 5-2.
I ended up getting a fly ball to right field, a ground out to first, and a
strikeout to end the inning. In the 9th, I rolled three consecutive
ground balls. We ended up getting two guys on base in the 9th inning, but
weren't able to push them across. I was very pleased with my outing last
night and felt much more comfortable on the mound. I threw a lot of
strikes with my sinker and my misses were down in the zone. I was happy
to keep the score at 5-2 and give our team a chance to win in the late
innings! This morning we leave for a six game road trip to Daytona Beach
and Brevard County! Buck |
| Saturday, April 11, 2009 - Day #54 |
|
Last
night I had my first outing in our home opener against the Clearwater
Threshers, affiliate of the Phillies. I entered the game in the 6th
inning, down 3-1, with a runner on second and no outs. I gave up a ground
ball base hit up the middle, which advanced the runner, making it first
and third. The next batter lined out to our first basemen who stepped on
first for a double play. I then jammed the next batter on an inside
fastball, which blooped over my head for an infield hit, scoring the
runner from third. The hit actually reminded me of a play I made back in
high school against Waynesboro in the district playoffs, which Coach
Shelley can attest to! I suppose I was more agile back then to make that
play!!! I ended the inning with a fly out to shallow right field. I
wasn't too happy with the outing, but will take it, considering it was my
first game back since early spring training. Playing down here has been
pretty cool so far. The atmosphere is very laid back and we have a lot of
guys who played in Lansing last year. I think it is going to be a very
enjoyable year!! Buck |
| Thursday, April 2, 2009 - Day #45 |
|
Today, the final rosters came out and I will be playing for the Dunedin
Blue Jays, which is our High A affiliate here in Florida. My arm has been
doing much better. I threw a 25-pitch bullpen today and it felt really
good. I stuck to throwing all fastballs and a few change-ups. I am
looking forward to getting back into games and the start of the season.
We break camp on Sunday and have our first game against the Phillies High
A affiliate in Clearwater on April 9th. Buck |

Sorry
I haven't updated the blog lately. This past week has been quite
frustrating trying to get rid of my shoulder impingement. I have been
getting treatment everyday to help take care of the inflammation and
continue to get it stretched to stay nice and loose. My shoulder started
feeling better the past few days, so they put me on an accelerated
throwing program in hopes to have me ready opening day, whereever that may
be. Hopefully, I will still have the opportunity to start in High A. This
is the last week of Spring Training before we break for our teams. Buck |
| Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - Day #36 |
|
Yesterday, I threw my live batting practice to work on my slider and
it went fairly well. I was definitely getting used to the grip and how to
throw it much better. I was also bumped down to the High-A roster
yesterday, which I assumed could happen. Unfortunately, today my
impingement syndrome came back in my shoulder. It is very frustrating
since I have been doing all the things to prevent it, but I suppose it is
better for it to happen now, rather than during the season. The trainers
are treating it right now and are giving me a few days off.
Hopefully, the inflammation goes down. Buck |
| Sunday, March 22, 2009 - Day #34 |
|
Yesterday, I ended up throwing in the High A again. I was working on my
new cutter during the game and it didn't go so well. I gave up a few hits
and two runs over one inning of work. It was frustrating throwing a pitch
that I wasn't quite comfortable with yet, but I suppose Spring Training is
the time to work on it. I am scheduled to throw tomorrow in a live
batting practice to work on a cutter/slider again. Hopefully, I can get a
good feel for it tomorrow because it will be a very good pitch to
compliment my sinker! Buck |
| Friday, March 20, 2009 - Day #32 |
|
Today, I went over to the major league game to be a backup pitcher against
the Tampa Bay Rays. I didn't get into the game, but it was a pretty cool
experience being among the big league pitchers. It felt surreal being in
the same locker room as Roy Halladay, Vernon Wells, Scott Rolen, Alex
Rios, B.J. Ryan and other big name players walking around! I am scheduled
to pitch in the Double A game tomorrow. Buck |
| Wednesday, March 18, 2009 - Day #30 |
|
Today, I threw my first inning of spring training against the Phillies
High-A team. I started the sixth inning, getting a ground out to third
and striking out the next two batters on inside sinking fastballs. I felt
really good and located my fastball really well! My velocity was 89-90,
which is pretty good for my first outing. I believe I will throw again on
Friday against the Pirates. On a side note, I want to say "Good Luck!" to the Mounts High School Baseball team in their Friday opener against Manheim Central! I saw a lot of young talent while I was working out with them this past off-season and am anxious to see how the season goes! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 17, 2009 - Day #29 |
|
Well,
my live batting practice went fairly well this past weekend. My pitching
coordinator taught me to throw a cutter, which seems like it may be a very
good pitch for me. I tried to learn one last year, but never got
comfortable with it. I threw 25 pitches in my live batting practice. I
kept the ball down for the most part and felt pretty good. I did leave
one fastball down the middle and gave up a home run to one of our catchers
in Lansing last year. I definitely haven't heard the end of it yet, ha-ha!
The new rosters also came out today and I stayed on the Double A roster,
as a bunch of guys moved down to High-A. I am scheduled to pitch one
inning tomorrow for the High-A team against the Phillies. Buck |
| Thursday, March 12, 2009 - Day #24 |
|
As of
two days ago, the rosters have been posted. I am currently on the Double-A
New Hampshire squad, which I was very happy to see! As I mentioned
before, you usually start at the level below where you are posted in
spring training, meaning I would be moved down to the High-A roster as the
Triple-A pitchers start filtering down from Big League camp. Although that
is the case, I am very optimistic right now, knowing that I stayed on one
roster the whole spring training last year! It sure will be nerve-racking
everyday as the rosters continue to change. I threw my final bullpen
today, before a live batting practice this weekend, which went really
well! I am working on a few mechanical things right now that have been
helping my delivery substantially! Buck |
| Monday, March 9, 2009 - Day #21 |
|
Yesterday was the report date for pitchers and catchers in minor league
camp. It was good to see the guys from last year's Lansing squad
and players I met through spring training and instructional league. These
first two days have been pretty short, consisting of meetings, fundamental
stations, and physical testing. The position player's report date is
tomorrow, so the workouts will begin to get much longer as we start
working all together. The rosters are not posted at this point, but I
hope to be on the New Hampshire Double-A roster. You usually play at the
level below where you are posted, but last year I was on the Lansing
roster and stayed on there the entire camp. I hope to do that again this
year! I will do my best to keep the blog updated with any changes or
pitching performances I may have! Buck |
| Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - Day #1 |
|
First
of all, welcome back and thank you to everyone who followed me through
last year's roller coaster of a season. Well, after a fast off-season I am back down here in Dunedin, Florida for my second spring training. My roommate Nate Starner, who also pitched for Shippensburg University and resides in Pennsylvania, and myself drove down here on Sunday. February 8th. Nate was picked up as a free agent by the Blue Jays a year before I was drafted. We also played together last year in Low Class A Lansing for a short time until he was moved up to Class A Advanced Dunedin. As for the first week of workouts, we have been going four days a week in the mornings. The workouts right now are pretty laid back and not too involved, considering Spring Training doesn't "officially" start until March 8th. We are working out at the Class A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays stadium for now, at least until the big league players start their games next week, and then we will head to our main complex, also located in Dunedin. I threw a 30-pitch bullpen today and my arm felt pretty good. My location was off a bit, but understandable so early in the year. Once again, I'm excited to hopefully keep everyone updated through the blog as I did last year. Buck |
| Thursday, October 2, 2008 - Day #242 |
|
Yesterday, I threw another short side, fastballs only. My pitching
coordinator wants me to concentrate on my sinker and glove-side fastball
at this point. I am scheduled to throw a live batting practice tomorrow,
all fastballs once again. On another note, we played the Yankees today at
our complex in Dunedin, FL. The pitchers, not throwing in the game today,
were sitting in the bleachers watching when one of the guys pointed out
Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson. He was in uniform and sitting with the
players doing the radar gun. There was also another Yankee legend in
attendance, Tino Martinez. He was also suited up and helping the coaching
staff. It's pretty neat seeing those legendary players and being among
them, knowing that they were in our same situation at one point in their
careers. I am scheduled to fly home Saturday night! Buck |
| Monday, September 29, 2008 - Day #239 |
|
I
threw my second side today since being down here at Instructional League.
My arm felt pretty good once again. There is still some pinching in my
elbow when I straighten it out, but it doesn't really concern me since
it's fine when I'm throwing. The pitchers had a long talk today
about proper delivery and mechanics that all of us need to focus on in the
off-season. I need to work on stepping straighter towards home plate and
breaking my hands earlier. This will help me finish off all of my pitches
and will have less stress on my arm. Tomorrow, I have my individual
meeting with the pitching coordinator and coaches to go over things I need
to work on. Five more days left until I head back home! Buck |
| Friday, September 26, 2008 - Day #236 |
|
Today
was pretty laid back here in Instructional League. In the morning, we had
an hour-long meeting where the coaches talked about ethics and acting
appropriate as a professional baseball player. After the meeting, we
stretched, talked about yesterday's game and worked on covering home on
pass balls. I then threw my first side (bullpen), consisting of thirty
pitches. My arm felt really good, which I was very happy about. The
coordinator didn't have much to say, only that I need to work on stepping
straighter and not throwing across my body so much. Tomorrow, we have an
early game against the Phillies and then have off on Sunday. I am
scheduled to throw another side on Monday. Buck |
| Thursday, September 25, 2008 - Day #235 |
|
Well...on Tuesday my Pitching Coordinator called me while I was at home
working and asked me to fly down to Florida for Instructional League. I
flew out of Philadelphia Wednesday morning and arrived in Tampa that
afternoon. I began working out with the guys today. We have a light
practice in the morning, in which we go over various defensive situations
and plays, then played a game against the Phillies at their High A stadium
in Clearwater. I throw a side tomorrow and hopefully in a game on
Monday. I am tentatively scheduled to fly back home on October 4th, which
is the last day of Instructional League. I am very happy they invited me
down and are taking so much interest. Buck |
| Monday, August 25, 2008 - Day #204 |
|
Well,
the plans to come home have already changed on me today when I went in for
rehab. The trainer wants me to stay a little longer than Thursday, most
likely until Sunday. He didn't say why yet, but I am assuming that he
wants me to get a little farther into my throwing program before they send
me home. I threw two sets of 25 at 60 feet today and it felt pretty good
once again. On another note, I got to shake hands and meet Cito Gaston in the weight room today. He is the current manager of the Blue Jays and also led the Jays in there back-to-back World Series Championships in 1992-1993. Yes, that was the year Joe Carter hit the walk-off home run against Mitch Williams to beat the Phillies in game six of the 1993 World Series, for all you Philly Fans!!! The Blue Jays are playing the Tampa Bay Rays right now, so he came over to tour our facility. I also met Jeremy Accardo who is a right-handed relief pitcher in the Big Leagues. He is also down here rehabbing an arm injury. Buck |
| Sunday, August 24, 2008 - Day #203 |
|
Well,
as of the other day, I will be flying back to Lansing on Thursday to get
my car and drive back to Ephrata. My throwing program has been successful
until this point and my elbow has felt much better. They feel there is no
reason to keep me down here right now, considering I am a "low
maintenance" guy and can do everything on my own at this point. They are
making up a throwing program for me to continue at home, which will end
with me throwing a full bullpen, then shutting it down for the
off-season. If I have any pain while I am at home, they will fly me back
down to Florida to do more tests or to operate if necessary. It's pretty
frustrating because they don't tell you a whole lot. Hopefully, I can
continue this throwing program pain free and shut my arm down until next
Spring Training! Buck |

The
last few days have been pretty uneventful. Everyday, I head down at 10:00
am to Dunedin to our main to rehab my elbow. The last couple of days I've
been lifting, conditioning and doing my shoulder/cuff routine for my
rehab. Yesterday, I was working out with Aaron Hill, who has had some
very long spurts up in the Big Leagues. Supposedly, Scott Rolen is down
here rehabbing as well, but I haven't seen him yet. Since the cortisone
shot, I wasn't able to throw until today. The trainer and I threw 25
throws at 45 feet, which is really close. It felt really good to throw
again without pain. Tomorrow, we will probably back it up to 60 feet,
depending on how my arm responds from today's workout. I am pretty
optimistic that this cortisone hit the right spot and that things may be
back to normal soon! Buck |

|
Last
night, I flew into Tampa Airport and arrived at my hotel at 7:00 pm. I
saw our team orthopedic, Dr. Mirabelli this morning. He did some tests on
my arm and didn't think it was the bone spur that has been aggravating my
elbow. He believes the problem may be that my ulnar nerve is getting
caught in the joint. However, they did give me another cortisone shot,
this time in a different location, that should be more effective if the
discomfort is, in actuality, a bone spur. I will start throwing in four
or five days to see if this shot made any difference. If this doesn't
work, they may consider surgery to relocate my ulnar nerve to the top side
of my one elbow bone, which would loosen it up and keep it out of the
way. This is a pretty common surgery for pitchers and the recovery time
isn't that long. After the appointment, I went to the Spring Training
Facility and worked out for a few hours. Besides working out, I am taking
it easy until I begin throwing again. The High A Dunedin team is home
right now, so I might head over there to catch a few games this week. Buck |

|
Well,
this past week has been pretty uneventful since receiving the cortisone
shot. I tried throwing three days ago and still had some discomfort in
the back of my elbow. The trainer believes it is a bone spur, and that it
may need to be shaved off, considering the cortisone didn't help very
much. I am flying down to Dunedin, Florida tomorrow to see our team
orthopedic and possibly have surgery. Either way, I will be spending the
rest of the year in Florida rehabbing my elbow. I was also invited to
Instructional League, which is a very good thing. They only invite a
certain number of players and I am glad to be one of them. Whether I am
healthy or not, I believe I will be participating in the three-week camp,
during September and October. I will keep the blog updated over the
upcoming weeks to let everyone know of my progress. Hope for the
best! Buck |

|
Yesterday, we started a four-game series against the South Bend
Silverhawks in Indiana. I received a cortisone shot in my elbow to help
the inflammation and, hopefully, to take care of my pain. If the
cortisone shot doesn't work, then I might have to under-go arthroscopic
surgery, which wouldn't be that long of a recovery. Hopefully, the
cortisone does the trick and I can start throwing again in a few days. We
have 27 regular season games left and then playoffs. It's crazy how
quickly the season has gone by. I would love to throw a few more times
before this season ends! Buck |
| Sunday, August 3, 2008 - Day #182 |
|
We
finished up our series in Beloit, Wisconsin today and are now in South
Bend, Indiana. I got to hang out with Mike McCardell, who played for
Kutztown, and is now playing for the Beloit Snappers. It was pretty cool
playing against somebody in the Midwest League who I faced numerous times
in college. I tried throwing again the past two days and still had a lot
of pain in my elbow. I am going to see another doctor here in South Bend
to see what might be the problem. Hopefully, they will try to give me a
cortisone shot to see if that does the trick. Being on the DL is now
getting more and more frustrating everyday! Buck |
| Friday, August 1, 2008 - Day #180 |
|
Well,
it has been a long time since I have written anything, but there isn't
much to write about, right now. I am still on the DL with my elbow
discomfort. I finished taking a prescription steriod pack this past week
and it has made my elbow feel a little better. The trainer said I need
some more time until I attempt to throw again. Hopefully, it will feel
better when I throw and I can get back for playoffs. If I don't make it
back for playoffs I hope to get invited to instructional league, so I can
get some more innings and work on my pitches. Right now, all I'm doing is
continuing to rehab and condition! Buck |
| Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - Day #170 |
|
Well,
I don't have any better news than I did last time. I tried throwing a few
days ago, thinking everything would be back to normal, and I still had a
decent amount of pain in the back of my elbow. The trainer is thinking it
might be a posterior impingement that is now inflamed. The Lansing team
Orthopedic is going to take a look at it on Wednesday and possibly give me
a cortisone shot, if that is necessary. Hopefully, things will start
looking up shortly. The past month, has been very frustrating. Buck |
| Thursday, July 17, 2008 - Day #165 |
|
I got
an MRI last week and my test results came back negative according to our
team orthopedic in Lansing. The films are being sent to Florida right now
for our Blue Jays Orthopedic to look over. My elbow has been feeling much
better, but it is hard to tell until I start throwing. I am not sure what
steps they are going to take for the rest of the year. Since I was
throwing so well, they may have me take it easy the rest of the year and
go to Instructional League in the fall. They only invite a set amount of
pitchers to that, so that would be a good thing. It would be frustrating
to miss playoffs though! There is a possibility that I could come back at
the end of the year for the postseason, but I'm not going to make any
predictions at this point. Buck |
| Saturday, July 5, 2008 - Day #153 |
|
Today, we played the Great Lakes Loons, starting a 10-game home stand. We
didn't play very well and ended up losing 6-3. My arm has been feeling
much better the last few days. I saw the doctor today and she thought I
should take another day or two off and begin throwing to see how it
feels. She thinks there may have been a little tendinitis building up. I
still think there is something else going on in my elbow, but maybe not.
She subscribed me some high dose anti-inflammatory to take the next couple
of weeks. Hopefully things still feel okay when I begin throwing again.
On another note, I had a neat off-field experience tonight that I thought I would share. Every home game, a pitcher, who is not playing that night, has to film our hitters and pitchers. Tonight, I was assigned to that duty and had to sit in the stands. I was sitting behind our dugout filming some hitters when a young boy, his mother and grandmother kept looking over at me, got my attention. They eventually asked if I was a Lugnut player, and what I was doing. I continued talking to them and the young boy had a bunch of questions as you would assume. I thought it would be a good idea to get him a ball, so in between innings, I ran down to the bullpen and grabbed one from the guys. He asked me to sign it right away, and then as I sat there, I thought it would be cool if I got some more of the guys' autographs for him. At the end of the game, I told him to come down to the bullpen with me and I had all the relievers sign the baseball. It was another neat moment that keeps the whole professional baseball experience in perspective. Taking those few minutes to do those things, and seeing the kid and his family so appreciative and happy, was really neat! Buck |
| Wednesday, July 2, 2008 - Day #150 |
|
Last
night, we started a four game series in South Bend, Indiana, about five
minutes from Notre Dame. We won 9-6, as our offense exploded in the first
inning scoring four runs, including a first pitch, lead-off home run by
our shortstop Justin Jackson. Unfortunately, I may be shut down for a
little while again, as my elbow discomfort from my last outing seems to be
a little more serious than I expected. I tried throwing yesterday and was
getting a decent bit of pain by my ulnar collateral ligament which is the
"Tommy John" ligament). Hopefully it is only a sprain or something minor,
but it has been hurting at my extension point, which could be a bone spur
or something of that nature. I am going to see our team doctor when we get
home from the road trip and go from there. It's really frustrating having
these injuries being at the top of my career right now, and pitching so
well. I suppose these are the ups and downs that baseball players have in during their careers and the type of thing you just have to fight through. Since I will not be throwing anytime soon, I will keep the blog updated with my progress and diagnosis! Hope for the best! Buck |
| Sunday, June 29, 2008 - Day #147 |
|
Today, we played our third of four games against the West Michigan
Whitecaps. I started the 7th inning with a 5-4 lead. I struck out the
first two batters and rolled a groundball to our shortstop to end the
inning. I went back out for the 8th, with the same score, and gave up a
lead-off hit. The runner then stole second on a pitch out, but the throw
was off the bag. The next guy hit a chopper back to me and I had the guy
stranded between second and third, but held on to the ball too long and he
slid back into second safely. The next batter grounded into a 5U-3 double
play on a curve ball. I ended the inning with a fly ball to centerfield.
I came back out in the 9th, with a 5-4 lead, and gave up a lead-off ground
ball single through hole between third and short, however our leftfielder
booted the ball and the runner took second base. I was then pulled from
the game in favor of a lefty-lefty match-up. Our reliever quickly got two
outs, but our third baseman threw the ball away to first for the final out
of the game to tie it up. We ended up losing in the bottom of the 13th.
I compiled two more scoreless innings and my third hold of the season. I
had a little discomfort in my elbow the last inning I threw, but hopefully
it will go away in a few days. Buck |
| Saturday, June 28, 2008 - Day #146 |
|
On
Thursday night, we played the Great Lakes Loons for our last game of the
series. I came in the seventh inning with two outs and a man on first. I
got the first batter to ground out to the shortstop to end the inning. I
came back out for the eighth, but struggled with my command. I gave up a
lead off single to center field and, on the next batter, the runner on
first advanced all the way to third on an overthrow at second base on a
steal attempt. I walked the next hitter in about 10 pitches, as he fouled
off everything I threw! I then gave up a jam-job blooper to center, which
scored the man on third, which ended up being unearned. The next guy laid
down a sacrifice bunt that I fielded and got the out at first. I struck
out the next batter with runners on second and third for the second
out. We recorded the third out on a pass ball that bounced straight back
to the catcher and caught the guy trying to take home. It was a rough
outing for me, but definitely could have been much worse. I made some
good pitches when I needed to. I hope to pitch again tomorrow in our
series against West Michigan! Buck |
| Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - Day #142 |
|
The
last two nights we played the Great Lakes Loons, affiliate of the Los
Angeles Dodgers. I pitched in last night's game, which we lost 2-0. I
entered the game in the 8th inning with a runner on third and one out,
trailing by the final score. The first batter hit a line drive on a
hanging slider to our third baseman, who made a great diving play. The
next batter grounded out to the second baseman to end the inning. I came
back out for the ninth and struck out the side, while surrendering one
walk. I was very happy with the way I threw the ball. I located my
sinker very well and threw some quality secondary pitches. Buck |
| Sunday, June 22, 2008 - Day #140 |
|
Today, we finished our four game series against the Fort Wayne Wizards.
We swept all four games and are leading the league in total wins. I came
off the DL last night and immediately made my first appearance. I started
the 7th inning with a 4-0 lead, and pitched very well. I got the first
batter to ground out to the shortstop. The second guy hit a line drive
back at me that tipped off my glove for an infield hit. I struck out the
next guy on three straight fastballs on the outside corner, and got a
comebacker-ground ball to finish the inning. I felt very good and was
sitting 91-92 mph with my fastball. I was glad to see that I was able to
maintain my velocity over my extended break. I should be ready to go for
tomorrow night's game against the Great Lakes Loons! Buck |
| Thursday, June 19, 2008 - Day #137 |
|
Tonight, we started the second half of the season against the Fort Wayne
Wizards. We ended up winning our division for the first half, giving us
home field advantage in the playoffs at the end of the season. I threw a
bullpen today and felt really good. I should be put back on the active
roster on Saturday, and be game-ready. I can't wait to throw again!!!
It feels like I haven't pitched in a really long time. I hope to pick up
were I left off! Buck |
| Saturday, June 14, 2008 - Day #132 |
|
Right
now, we are in a playoff race for the first half of the season. Whoever
wins the first and second half makes the playoffs at the end of the year.
We have two more games against the Great Lakes Loons before the All-Star
break and have a one-game lead in first place. We really need to win
tonight to at least clinch a playoff birth. I am still on the DL and they
pushed my throwing program back a little to take advantage of the
three-day All-Star break coming up on the 16, 17, and 18th. I was hoping
to throw a bullpen before the break, but now it is going to be after. It's
really frustrating not being able to throw in games, especially being in
the playoff race and having so many close games lately. The pitching
coordinator, who makes most of the moves in the minor leagues, is the one
who altered my throwing program, so I suppose that is a good thing. My
arm is feeling great though, and I have been long-tossing the last few
days. Hopefully I will be back on the mound after the All-Star break! Buck |
| Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - Day #128 |
|
I
haven't had much to write about lately since I have been on the Disabled
List, but my shoulder is feeling much better. The training staff and
doctors decided to give me a cortisone shot last Saturday to speed up the
process and minimize the inflammation. I wasn't able to throw for four
days after the shot for precautionary reasons, but have been throwing the
last few days. I have been getting "stim" and ultrasound treatment,
followed by a lot of icing during the day, and my shoulder has felt back
to normal. I threw at 75 and 90 feet yesterday with no discomfort. I feel
like I am game ready, but the trainers and coordinators always lengthen
the throwing program to make sure we are 100% before we come back. I will
have to throw a bullpen and a live batting practice before I head back
into games. My pitching coach said he would be surprised if I throw before
the All-Star break, which is coming up in a few days. I am glad that
everything is feeling back to normal and am very anxious to get back on
the mound!!! Buck |
| Saturday, May 31, 2008 - Day #118 |
|
Last
night, we beat the Great Lake Loons in a tight game, winning 1-0. I didn't
pitch, but got ready in the 9th inning in case we got into trouble. When I
was getting ready in the bullpen, I got real bad pinching in my shoulder
again. It was the same feeling I got in February when I had my
impingement. It got to the point where it was unbearable, so I told the
trainer and I was put on the Disabled List for the next few days. Our team
doctor checked me out and said my shoulder feels really strong and that it
is probably an impingement again or bicep tendinitis. It should only take
a few days to heal up. Hopefully, I will be back at it again shortly! Buck |
| Sunday, May 25, 2008 - Day #112 |
|
Today, we played the South Bend Silverhawks again. I pitched four innings,
gave up no hits, no runs, one walk and one hit by pitch, while picking up
my second win of the season. I started the 5th inning with a 5-1 lead and
pounded the zone with my sinker. I got a lot of ground balls today and
kept the ball down very well. My velocity was the best it has ever been. I
was sitting 90-92 mph and topped out at 93, in which I hit four or five
times. 93 is the hardest I have ever thrown throughout my career. I came
out after the 8th inning and our last reliever gave up a few runs to end
the game. I was happy with the way my outing went, but need to improve my
secondary pitches when I am ahead in the count. Hopefully, I will have a
day or two off, since I have thrown in four of the last five games!! Buck |
| Friday, May 23, 2008 - Day #110 |
|
I got
to pitch again tonight, so here is some more stuff for the blog. I started
the 7th inning with a 5-1 lead over the South Bend Silverhawks. I kept my
sinker down in the zone very well again tonight. I got the first hitter to
fly out to deep right center field and then rolled a ground ball to our
shortstop for the second out. The third guy hit a line drive single to
right field. I ended the inning with a fly out to center field. I came out
for the 8th inning, but only faced the first hitter before I was pulled. I
gave up a weak ground ball hit to our shortstop who slipped trying to make
the throw. I was pitching well, but we wanted to match up the next hitters
with our lefty reliever. He ended up getting a double play and got out of
the inning to leave my guy stranded. I ended up getting my third hold of
the season, which I was very happy with. I have pitched 3 times in the
past 4 days. Its nice to get that kind of action out of the bullpen!!! Buck |
| Friday, May 23, 2008 - Day #110 |
|
Last
night, I had another inning of relief work in our 9-4 victory. We ended
the series taking three out of four games from the Dayton Dragons. I
pitched a scoreless ninth inning, giving up one base hit. I only threw
seven sinkers and kept them down in the zone very well. Tonight we take on
the South Bend Silverhawks at Oldsmobile Park! I also wanted to take the time to give a congrats to my alma mater on another winning season. Ever since our League Championship team in 2003, Ephrata Mounts Baseball has been a solid competitor in the L-L League. It's nice to know that the success has continued and that the players now have a tradition to live up. Congrats again! Buck |
| Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - Day #108 |
|
Last
night we won a close game in extra innings against the Dayton Dragons. We
were tied 1-1 in the 10th inning, with a man on first and 2 outs, when I
entered the game. I got a ground ball to second base to end the inning. We
then scored a run in the top of the 11th to take the lead 2-1. I went back
out for the 11th and struck out the first batter, got a ground out to the
shortstop, and then ended the game with a fly ball to right field. I
picked up my first win of the year and felt I threw the ball fairly well
again. I hope to get into tonight's game again! Buck |
| Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - Day #107 |
|
Tonight, we played in Dayton, Ohio against the Dragons. Although I did not
pitch, I thought I would share some of my off-field experiences since I
have been playing for the Lugnuts. The game tonight was by far the coolest atmosphere I have ever played in (besides the 2003 Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship game, of course). Their stadium was set up Major League-style and their games are sold out every night. The crowd was awesome and the whole stadium was very professional. Another cool experience I had a few weeks ago was doing a mini-press conference with young kids. We had Kiddy Day at our stadium and Ex-Texas Longhorn Randy Boone and I volunteered to be part of the Elementary Kids press conference before our game. It was set up like a normal press conference with the two of us at the front and we took random questions from the kids, in which they were collaborating to write an article. It was a very neat experience and events like this help to keep the whole baseball experience in perspective. We play the Dragons for three more games and head back to Lansing for a long home stand next week. Buck |
| Monday, May 19, 2008 - Day #106 |
|
On
Saturday, we played a double-header against the West Michigan Whitecaps to
make up a rain-out. They are an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. In game
one, we were losing 6-0 in the 5th inning and that is when I entered the
game. I threw my sinker down in the zone very well and got two broken bats
in the two innings that I pitched. I gave up no runs, one hit and one walk
over the two innings. The hit was a weak infield chopper that our second
baseman couldn't get to. We play the Dayton Dragons tomorrow and I have a
very good chance of pitching in that game as well. Buck |
| Thursday, May 15, 2008 - Day #102 |
|
Last
night, we played the Dayton Dragons, affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. I
started the 6th inning with the game 1-1. I got a strike out, ground ball
and fly ball in that inning and came back out for the 7th. In the 7th, I
quickly gave up two doubles in a row down the third base line. They were
good pitches down and in that were hit hard on the ground. I ended up
striking out the next batter and getting two fly balls to leave the guy
stranded on second. I gave up one run that inning making the game 2-1. We
scored in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 2-2. We ended up losing
3-2. I was happy with the way I pitched. I hope to get back out on the
bump soon again! Buck |

|
Tonight. we played the West Michigan Whitecaps again, affiliate of the
Detroit Tigers. I came in to pitch in the 7th inning with runners on first
and second and one out and we were ahead 2-1. The first batter I faced
grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. It was on a sinker.
That was the end of my night after that. I was really pleased to come into
that situation and roll the ground ball double play!! We ended up winning
7-3! Buck |

|
Tonight, we played the West Michigan Whitecaps, affiliate of the Detroit
Tigers. I started the 8th inning and faced two right handed hitters. We
were losing 2-0, so we were pitching to the situation to keep it a close
game and give us a chance to win. I got two ground ball outs and then we
brought a left-handed reliever in to face the lefty hitter. I threw my new
curve ball tonight and it worked very well! We ended up losing 2-0! Buck |
| Tuesday, May 6, 2008 - Day #93 |
|
Today
and yesterday, we played the Beloit Snappers, affiliate of the Minnesota
Twins. We lost both games, 4-2 and 6-1. I came in the game last night in
the 7th inning. I started the inning and struck out the first batter I
faced on a nice slider. The next guy hit a slider to the right-center gap
for a triple. We then had the infield in and I jammed the hitter on a
sinker and he fisted it to shallow center to score the guy on third. After
that I gave up my first walk of the season and then got two more outs to
finish the inning. I had a better 8th inning, getting a ground ball, line
out, fly out and gave up one hit. I struggled with the location of my
sinker, but should have kept throwing it instead of throwing off-speed
pitches. I have had some rough outings lately, but it's nice being a
reliever and being able to get back out there in the next few days. Buck |
| Saturday, May 3, 2008 - Day #90 |
|
Last
night, we played the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. I started the 8th inning,
while we were losing 4-2. I quickly got two ground ball outs to third base
before giving up a base hit up the middle. The inning ended on the next
batter when our catcher threw out the runner trying to steal second. I
then entered the 9th inning, still losing 4-2. I gave up a lead-off home
run on a split-finger that was belt high. After that, I gave up a few more
base hits, rolled a ground ball double play and a pop out to third base.
We ended up losing 5-2. I wasn't too happy with my outing last night. I
didn't have great command with my fastball and wasn't getting ahead in the
count. I hope to throw again shortly! Buck |

Last
night, we played the Quad City River Bandits, affiliate of the Cardinals.
We played at the Cedar Rapid Kernels field because Quad Cities' field was
flooded by the Mississippi River. I had another tough outing last night. I
came in the 9th inning with a 3-2 lead, with the bases loaded and no outs.
We had the infield in and I got a weak ground ball, but it was between
third and short, which scored one run to tie it up. The next batter, I got
another chopper ground ball up the middle that went off the top of my
glove and the winning run scored. They were both ground balls that I
wanted, just hit in bad spots. Today, we are playing the River Bandits at
the Clinton Lumberkings' field. Buck |

|
The
past three days, we played the Clinton Lumberkings, affiliate of the Texas
Rangers. Before we left for our road trip, we played Thursday in the "Crosstown
Showdown" against Michigan State. We had pitchers come in from extended
spring training to throw during this game. Although I didn't get to pitch,
it was still a neat experience because there were over 12,000 people at
the game. I got to pitch again today in the 9th inning. I came in with
runners on first and third with one out, with a 1-0 lead. I gave up a base
hit fly ball to center field that scored the guy on third, which tied the
game. I got a fly ball to right for the second out and then gave up a base
hit up the middle that scored the winning run. I threw some quality
pitches and the game-winning base hit was a good slider down and away. I
guess that's the way it goes sometimes when you're a reliever. I hope to
get back out on the bump again soon! Buck |

Tonight, we played the Peoria Chiefs, affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. My
fellow Shippensburg teammate, Nate Starner, started on the mound and threw
six shutout innings. I ended up closing in the ninth with a 7-2 lead. The
first batter I faced grounded out to the shortstop. I struck the second
batter out on a nice split-finger and then gave up a base hit up the
middle. I ended the inning with a line out to our shortstop. It was
another good outing and I felt very comfortable! Buck |

Today, we played the Kane County Cougars to finish up the series. We won
10-4 and I pitched the 9th inning. The first batter lined out to the
shortstop and then I got a ground ball to shortstop. The next guy hit a
single up the middle, followed by a triple down the line, which scored the
man on first. It was the first run I have given up this year. The last guy
flew out to center field to end the game. I was happy with the way I kept
my fastball down in zone. The base hits were pretty good pitches, however
they just took pretty good swings. Buck |

Yesterday and today, we played the Kane County Cougars, affiliate of the
Oakland A's. We lost both games and I didn't get into either game. I hope
to pitch tomorrow in our last game against the Cougars. Thursday night we
had 7,600 fans because it was 70's Night and Thirsty Thursday! It was
pretty cool playing in front of that many fans! Buck |

Today, we finished up our series against the Burlington Bees, affiliate of
the Kansas City Royals. We went 1-2 against the Bees and lost our game
today. I entered the game today in the seventh inning, losing 7-3 with
runners on first and second with two outs. I quickly got the first batter
I faced to ground out to third on a sinking fastball. The next inning, I
struck out the first batter and got two ground balls, one to second and
the other to shortstop. We only scored one run in the 9th before falling
7-4. I was pleased with another good outing and hope to continue this for
a while! Buck |

Yesterday and today, we played the Cedar Rapid Kernels, the affiliate of
the Angels. We lost last night 1-0 in a pitcher's duel. Today, we won 3-1
in another close game. I got my first professional hold, pitching two
scoreless innings. I started the seventh with a 1-0 lead. I struck out my
first batter on a nice split-finger, then got a ground out before giving
up a base hit and a line out. We scored two more runs in the eighth to
make it 3-0. In the bottom of the eighth, I went 1-2-3, striking out one
batter. We then handed the ball over to our closer for the ninth. I
finished the day with two strikeouts, no walks, no runs, and one hit. The temperature for both games was in the 20's and it was snowing for most of the game today!!! I never imagined playing in anything worse than during my baseball career in Pennsylvania! Buck |
| Thursday, April 10, 2008 - Day #67 |
|
Today, we got the internet at our new apartments so I should be able to
write on a more daily basis. We had a rain out today against South Bend
and leave for Iowa tomorrow morning. We play the Cedar Rapids Kernels
Friday to Sunday, then head to the Burlington Bees for a three-game
series. Buck |
| Tuesday, April 8, 2008 - Day #65 |
|
Tonight, I made my first appearance in front
of the home crowd, entering the game in the seventh with us leading South
Bend, 9-3. I came in with two outs and a man on and rolled a ground
ball to end the inning. In the eighth, I gave up one hit and struck
out a batter. Then, in the ninth, I pitched a 1-2-3 inning, with
another strikeout. My splitter was working well and I was able to
keep my sinker down. My fastball had good movement and the hitters
were making a lot of their contact off the end of the bat. I don't have internet access here in my apartment yet, so in the meantime, I'll have to make contact via phone calls. Once I get hooked up, I should be able to post again on a daily basis. Buck |
| Saturday, April 5, 2008 - Day #62 |
|
Today, we played the Fort Wayne Wizards for the third time. We won 11-1
and I threw the eighth and ninth innings. I started the eighth inning and
was very aggressive with my sinker. We had a big lead, so I wanted to
pound the zone and get quick outs. I gave up one hit and had two
strikeouts in the 8th, and threw pretty well in the 9th. I hit one guy on
an inside fastball that got away from me, but other than that, I got three
quick outs! It was nice to get the first outing over with!!! Buck |
| Thursday, April 3, 2008 - Day #60 |
|
Tonight was our first game and we played the Fort Wayne Wizards. We lost
7-1 and I didn't get to pitch. The game was definitely a different type of
atmosphere from any baseball that I have ever experienced. It was pretty
neat with all the extra hype and things going on around the stadium. We
play a four game series here and head back to Lansing for our home opener
on Monday! Buck |
| Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - Day #58 |
|
Today, we had a light practice at a local indoor facility called "Frozen
Ropes". We stretched, tossed, did some team defense, quick PFP's, and
conditioned. In the evening, we had "Meet the Team" at our hotel here in
Lansing. It was mostly for season ticket holders and local fans. We sat at
tables in our uniform tops and signed autographs for about an hour, then
we were introduced one at a time to the crowd! Tomorrow, we are having
another short practice and then get ready for our road trip on Thursday!
Buck |
| Monday, March 31, 2008 - Day #57 |
|
Today, we arrived in Lansing, Michigan. We spent a few hours checking out
the stadium and running through some photos and media things in our
uniforms. Tomorrow, we practice in a local indoor facility and have "Meet
the Team" back at our hotel for all the season ticket holders. Seeing the
stadium in person today was pretty surreal! Buck |
| Saturday, March 29, 2008 - Day #55 |
|
Today, I pitched against the Yankees for the last time this Spring
Training. I started the bottom of the 8th, and we were losing 7-3. I threw
very well again, especially the new split-finger. The first batter flew
out to center field. I then gave up a bloop base hit to left field and
struck out the next guy. I ended the inning on a fly ball to left field.
Tomorrow, we have a camp day and head out Monday morning for Michigan! Buck |
| Friday, March 28, 2008 - Day #54 |
|
Today, the final rosters were posted and I am heading to LANSING, MICHIGAN
on Monday morning!!!! I was the only guy from rookie ball last year to
make the Lansing squad! I pitch tomorrow, one last time against the
Yankees. We then have a camp day on Sunday and fly out Monday morning!!!!
Buck |
| Thursday, March 27, 2008 - Day #53 |
|
Today
was a much shorter day than most. We didn't have to be at the field
until late this morning and all we did was stretch, long toss, and play
our game. I didn't pitch today, but I did have to man the radar gun for
the Low-A Lansing game. The rosters didn't change much, however three guys
were released. Hopefully, the final rosters are up tomorrow!! Buck |
| Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - Day #52 |
|
Today, I threw against the Phillies Low-A team. I pitched 2 innings,
giving up one unearned run. I kept the ball down very well again today and
threw my split-finger for the first time. It was a pretty good pitch and
had a lot of break to it. My velocity was the best it has ever been
throughout my career. I was sitting 89-91 in the first inning and 91-92
the second inning that I threw. There were more roster changes today, but
I was still on the Lansing squad. Hopefully, they post the final rosters
tomorrow! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - Day #51 |
|
Today, there were new rosters posted in the locker room. They separated
the Low-A Lansing squad and put a lot of guys in Extended Spring Training.
I was still on the Lansing Roster, which I was very pleased to see. They
said the rosters aren't final, but most of the guys said they are probably
very close, with a few moves here and there. I hope to stay on that
roster. I pitch tomorrow against the Phillies at home. Buck |
| Sunday, March 23, 2008 - Day #49 |
|
Today
was not the usual Easter Sunday! We had a stretch at 8:15 am and then a
intrasquad game at 9:30 am this morning. I pitched for the High-A Dunedin
team against the Low-A Lansing squad. I pitched the 5th and 6th inning. It
was probably my best performance of spring training! I was sitting 90-91
mph with my sinker and threw a few good cutters. I had one strike out and
gave up two hits. One of the hits was on a badly located fastball on a 1-2
count. That was the only sinker I left up in the zone all day. I felt
very, very comfortable with my fastball today and was spotting it very
well. The pitching coordinator took me to the bullpen afterwards and had
me throw some more cutters. He also worked with me to start to
develop a split-finger. Buck |
| Saturday, March 22, 2008 - Day #48 |
|
Today, I was the back-up pitcher for the High-A Dunedin game again. We
played against the Phillies in Clearwater. During the game, Jamie Moyer
came to the plate twice in one inning. He walked his first at bat and
scored two batters later. As soon as he scored he got back in the box to
lay down a bunt. Our catcher and pitcher said that he was literally
standing right on top of the plate! I am scheduled to throw in a simulated
game tomorrow since we have a camp day. Buck |
| Thursday, March 20, 2008 - Day #46 |
|
Today, I threw in the Low-A Lansing game. I entered the game in the top of
the 8th with one out and a man on second. I quickly got the second out,
which advanced the runner to third, but I ended up striking out the next
guy to end the inning. In the 9th inning, I got the first batter to hit a
chopper to third, but our third baseman bobbled it for an error. I then
gave up a double and three ground ball outs in a row to end the inning. I
was pleased with the way I pitched today. I kept my sinker down in the
zone and threw some pretty nice sliders! Buck |
| Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - Day #45 |
|
Today
and yesterday, we had regular practices in the morning, consisting of long
tossing, PFP's (pitchers fielding practice), team defensive fundamental
and shagging balls for batting practice! In the afternoon, we played games
against the Yankees and Rays. I was the back-up pitcher for the High-A
Dunedin team today, but didn't get in the game. I am scheduled to close in
the Low-A Lansing game tomorrow! Buck |
| Monday, March 17, 2008 - Day #43 |
|
Today, I had my first appearance against the Yankee's Single A team. I
started the 5th inning and had a rough start. I walked the first batter on
five pitches and gave up two hits after that, surrendering one run. I
finally settled down and got a ground ball and a strike out. The 6th
inning went much better. I got two ground balls and a fly out to right
field, throwing less than 10 pitches. I threw some quality sinkers when I
kept the ball down, but got hit hard when I left the ball up in the zone.
I was sitting 88-91 mph with my fastball, which I was quite happy about
this early in the year! I hope to throw in another day or two! Buck |
| Sunday, March 16, 2008 - Day #42 |
|
Yesterday, we had the awards assembly for last year's minor league season.
The Minor League Gold Glove award has been named after Tony Fernandez and
he was in attendance to present the trophy. He spoke briefly about his
career and gave advice about being ready for when an opportunity arises at
the next level. I am scheduled to throw second in tomorrow's game at the
Yankees Complex. Buck |
| Friday, March 14, 2008 - Day #40 |
|
Yesterday, we had a regular practice in the morning and games in the
afternoon against the Phillies. I was on the radar gun for the Triple-A
game. Today, I threw a 30-pitch live batting practice to four players on
the High-A Roster. I felt really good, but was leaving my fastball up in
the zone at times. I did throw a few decent fastballs that stayed down in
the zone and had some good sink. I hope to be in a game either Sunday or
Monday! Also, there were three pitchers released today, all from the Lansing Roster. Buck |
| Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - Day #38 |
|
We
had our first game today against the Phillies after a long morning
practice. The two single-A teams played at home, while the Double and
Triple-A teams played away. I believe I am still on schedule to throw a
live batting practice on Friday, setting me up for game action next week.
Hopefully, all goes well and I stay on schedule. I am looking forward to
pitching in a game situation! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - Day #37 |
|
Today
I threw my last pen before I throw live batting practice. I moved over to
the right side of the rubber and started throwing 2-seam fastballs and
cutters. It was probably my best pen since I have been down here at Spring
Training. I threw around 50 pitches and felt really good! I am looking
forward to live Batting Practice this week and heading into games! Buck |
| Monday, March 10, 2008 - Day #36 |
|
This
past weekend we had two very long days. We did our fundamental work in the
morning and started live batting practice in the afternoons, followed by a
regular batting practice. It gave the pitchers a lot of shagging duty!!!!
I am still a pen or two behind, but threw another pen on Saturday. The
pitching coordinator was working on new grips for my slider. He also moved
me from the left side of the rubber to the right side. It feels a lot
different, but he thinks it will help me get better arm extension on my
pitches. I am scheduled to throw another pen tomorrow. Buck |
| Friday, March 7, 2008 - Day #33 |
|
Today
was another long day at the field. We had a later start because it rained
a lot last night and we had to wait for the fields to dry up. We had a
meeting for over an hour in the morning, which consisted of 1996 Cy Young
Award winner Pat Hentgen and long time starter Dave Stieb, talking about
pitching. It was cool to hear their stories and similar mental challenges
they had throughout their careers, which I now find myself experiencing.
Buck |
| Thursday, March 6, 2008 - Day #32 |
|
The
days are getting longer here at Spring Training. We have more stations,
conditioning, and of course, shagging balls during batting practice, a
pitcher's favorite duty!!! I threw another side-pen today consisting of 30
pitches, mostly two-seam fastballs and change ups. My pitching coach from
last year introduced me to an ex-major leaguer who played many years with
the Blue Jays and was also a two-seam pitcher. He showed me a new grip for
my two-seamer and it worked great. I was last in the bullpen today and the
pitching coaches were giving me some positive comments, saying I looked
very good!! Hopefully I can keep that up!! Buck |
| Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - Day #31 |
|
Today, the rosters were posted, showing what team we will play games and
workout with for the remainder of Spring Training. I was on the low-single
A Lansing Lugnuts roster. Even though that sounds good, guys said that in
the past you play at one level below what you are posted at in Spring
Training, unless you dominate in your games. That means I would most
likely be sent to Extended Spring Training and play another short season,
either Short-A or Rookie ball again, hopefully not though! Buck |
| Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - Day #30 |
|
Today, I was able to throw a pen after going through three stations of
PFP's. I was limited to 25 pitches; fastballs and change ups. I was happy
with the way my pen went. I kept both my fastball and change up down in
the zone for the most part. Position players have physicals tomorrow
morning and we are working out in the afternoon. Thursday is our
first full workout with everyone there. Buck |
| Monday, March 3, 2008 - Day #29 |
|
The
second day of Spring Training was about the same as Day One. Our schedule
got altered because some of the big league guys had an intrasquad on one
of our fields. I ran through PFP drills and bunt defenses like we did
yesterday. We also got timed and tested during an agility workout at the
end of the day. Hope to throw a pen tomorrow! Buck |
| Sunday, March 2, 2008 - Day #28 |
|
First
day of Spring Training! Today was the first official day of Minor League
Spring Training for pitchers and catchers. We were all placed into a
specific group of eight to ten guys. That is the group that you go with
from station to station during your workouts. We had five stations today
after we stretched and threw. The stations were PFP's, towel drills and a
bullpen for our group today. Tomorrow, my group will switch and do PFP's
and bunt defenses the whole day. I didn't throw a pen today, but I am back
on the normal schedule starting tomorrow. I should be back on schedule for
a pen on Tuesday!!! Buck |
| Friday, February 29, 2008 - Day #26 |
|
Today, I long tossed and threw a short flat ground program. We have off
tomorrow and I will do the same thing on Sunday. The trainer said he will
then release me to the pitching coaches and hopefully they will allow me
to throw a pen on Monday or Tuesday. The rest of the pitchers and catchers
report on Sunday, which means things are going to speed up. Buck |
| Thursday, February 28, 2008 - Day #25 |
|
This
morning we practiced at the Spring Training facility for the first time. I
threw 2 sets of 25 at 90 and 120 feet today. The shoulder felt fine once
again. Tomorrow I am long tossing and throwing a flat ground. The
temperature was in the high 40's when we were warming up. The southern
boys weren't handling it to well!!! Buck |
| Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - Day #23 |
|
This
morning was another typical day at the field. The trainers increased my
throwing to 25 throws at 90 feet and 25 throws at 120 feet. My arm felt
great once again and they plan to move me back farther on Thursday. I
should throw at 150 feet, plus throw a flat-ground. That would put me back
on track for next week with throwing a pen. We move to the Spring Training
facility on Thursday so things should start picking up!!! Buck |
| Monday, February 25, 2008 - Day #22 |
|
Today
I had two sets of 25 throws at 90 feet. My shoulder felt great, stronger
than before. I told them I am ready to throw pens again, but since it is
early in the season they don't push it very fast. The trainer said I will
be ready to throw in spring training and will not be that far behind. I
hope I am up to speed by spring training because the guys said its not
good to be hurt during that time. Vince, who was my pitching coach last
year said not to worry, that I will be ready by spring training games. Buck |
| Friday, February 22, 2008 - Day #19 |
|
This
morning we had the usual stretch, throw, condition and lift. I threw a set
of 25 throws at 75 feet and another set at 90 feet. My arm felt really
good again, so hopefully they will allow me to throw a pen sometime soon.
We were informed today that we will be heading to the spring training
facility on Thursday of next week, as the big league guys will be coming
over to the stadium for the start of their season. Buck |
| Thursday, February 21, 2008 - Day #18 |
|
We
had our full physicals this morning, which lasted about two hours. The big
league guys were finishing up there physicals as we were getting started.
I was signing papers today sitting next to Scott Rolen at one point, and
then David Eckstein at another station. I also got to stand next to Frank
Thomas and saw Vernon Wells. In the afternoon, we had a quick stretch and
throw with only the pitchers and catchers. I threw a little more today and
backed it up to about 90 feet. The trainer said everything looks good so
he is going to accelerate my throwing program. My arm feels back to normal
and better then ever so hopefully things we speed up fast. Buck |
| Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - Day #16 |
|
Today
went well. I got to throw up to 90 feet again. The shoulder felt back to
normal, so hopefully they will excel my throwing program. I would like to
be throwing a pen again by the end of this week. Besides the throwing, I
got to meet Frank Thomas in the training room. I am not sure why he was at
our facility, but he seemed to be working out there for the day. We were
being treated by the same trainer and he was standing right next to me and
said "Hey! Whats up?". He's even bigger than you could imagine!!!!
Buck |
| Monday, February 18, 2008 - Day #15 |
|
More
guys have started to arrive this week. The locker room is getting pretty
packed. I started throwing again today, only at about 90 feet, but it felt
good. I hope to stretch it out a little longer tomorrow if I am allowed.
Buck |
| Friday, February 15, 2008 - Day #12 |
|
This
morning I went through an extensive shoulder stretching program with the
trainer. I took the day off from throwing and continued to condition and
lift. My shoulder feels much better, and I have the weekend off, so I plan
to begin throwing again on Monday. The trainers gave me some new
strengthening exercises for my back and stretches for my pecs that should
prevent the impingement from happening again. My arm feels a lot better
already. Buck |
| Thursday, February 14, 2008 - Day #11 |
|
Today
I was supposed to throw another side pen, but had a little set back. My
shoulder soreness got worse and I had some really bad pinching. I got some
treatment from the trainers for most of the day. They believe its an
impingement, which I have had in the past, and heals with a little rest
and strengthening. Hopefully, it will only shut me down for a few days.
Buck |
| Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - Day #10 |
|
Today
was our day off for the week, but I decided to do some cardio since we
don't do much long distance running at the field. Yesterday, we did the
usual stretch, throw, condition and lift. I got to long toss and really
stretch it out, but my shoulder wasn't feeling the best so I took it easy.
The soreness is most likely from the new arm angle and release point that
I have changed in my new mechanics. Buck |
| Monday, February 11, 2008 - Day #8 |
|
Today
I threw another 25-pitch side pen, all fastballs. Vince was working with
me on my mechanics again, which felt very awkward. It is tough to change
the mechanics you have used your entire life. My location wasn't very good
but Vince told me not to worry about it considering I am altering my
delivery. Buck |
| Friday, February 8, 2008 - Day #5 |
|
Today was a typical day at the field. We stretched, long tossed, ran
through a lower body circuit and lifted. I worked on new mechanical
changes in my delivery during a short flat ground. Hopefully, the sink
on my two-seam fastball will be improved from the adjustments. Buck |
| Wednesday, February 6, 2008 - Day #3 |
|
I got to throw my second bullpen today. It
was only 25 pitches, all fastballs. I felt pretty good but wasn't locating
the ball that well. My pitching coach from last year, Vince Horsman (who
is an ex-major leaguer), was working with me on my mechanics. He said I am
throwing across my body too much and am not stepping straight. He felt my
control and weight transfer will be much better if I concentrate on my
lower body action. Buck |
| Tuesday, February 5, 2008 - Day #2 |
|
Today, the minor league guys moved to the High A stadium in downtown
Dunedin. We will be working out there for the rest of February. The
facility is actually bigger and nicer than the spring training facility.
We also got our new workout gear and own personalized lockers. I got to
long toss, condition and lift at the stadium. The conditioning wasn't as
bad as I thought. Of course, it makes it a little easier when the temperature is 80 degrees rather than the 30 degree PA weather!! Buck |
| Monday, February 4, 2008 - Day #1 |
|
The first day down here in Dunedin,
Florida went well. We arrived at the field at 8:30am and were only allowed
to stretch and throw because we didn't receive our physicals until late in
the afternoon. I did get to meet starting Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Litsch
and I walked past Roy Halladay in the training room. There are a handful
of big league guys working out and hanging out at our facility. Buck |
