Official Competition Rules

Overview
The Dairy Queen
® Dinger Derby is a home run hitting contest to determine a “Dairy Queen® Dinger Duke”, (a home run champion for each circuit (Rookie, Junior, Senior, and Adult) and the “Dairy Queen® Dinger King, the overall home run champion of the Indoor War.  Each DQ Dinger Duke will win a coupon for a free Dairy Queen® Blizzard courtesy of Dairy Queen® of Ephrata.  The DQ Dinger King will win another coupon for a free Blizzard for being crowned the overall champion.  The DQ Dinger Derby is sponsored exclusively by Dairy Queen® of Ephrata with all proceeds benefiting the Ephrata Baseball Association and the Ephrata High School Baseball Booster Club.

Doctor Dinger
“Doctor Dinger”
will be the Dairy Queen® Dinger Derby Official.  His decisions regarding home runs and outs cannot be appealed and will be final.

Registration
Registration for the Dairy Queen
® Qualifying Round will begin Friday evening at 6:00 pm at the Scorer's Table located at Field 2.  There is a $5 entry fee for participation in this event.  Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis and only one entry per participant will be permitted until 10:00 am Saturday morning, at which time participants may sign-up for additional qualifying spots at the aforementioned rate. (See The Pitcher)

The Ball
Non-perforated Wiffle® “Play Balls” will be the official ball of the Dairy Queen® Dinger Derby.

The Bat
Each player must use an Official Wiffle® brand bat.  The bat may be taped but its natural shape may not be changed (Doctor Dinger will judge if a bat is legal).  No other alterations may be made.  No electrical tape may used on the bat handle.

The Pitcher
Pitches will be delivered to the batter via a pitching machine in an attempt to maintain consistency in the flight of the pitched ball.  One pitching machine will be used throughout the Dairy Queen
® Dinger Derby.

A Dinger
Any batted ball that hits in the air over the designated "Home Run Line" is considered a Dinger.

“Hit It Here!” Banners
Any participant, during any round of the Dairy Queen
® Dinger Derby or Circuit Championship Game of the Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament, that hits a Dinger off of the Dairy Queen® “Hit It Here!” banners located on the walls in the “power alleys” above the designated “Home Run Line” will receive a coupon for a free Blizzard courtesy of Dairy Queen® of Ephrata.

The DQ Qualifier Round
The Dairy Queen
® Qualifier Round will begin at 10:00 pm on Friday evening on Field 2.  For one hour, participants can get an early feel for the Derby and set the pace for Saturday's competition, when the Qualifier Round resumes at 2:00 pm on Field 2.  On Saturday, the Qualifier Round will run for approximately two and half hours before the round closes and each of the participants with the five highest Dinger totals (plus ties) from each circuit advance to the Dairy Queen® Survivor Round.

Each participant will be given ten outs.  An out is any swing attempt that does not result in a Dinger (home run) or two consecutive balls that land in the strike zone netting behind home plate.  Doctor Dinger will be the judge on all Dingers and outs.  There are no appeals.  Doctor Dinger is empowered to charge a participant with an out for arguing calls.  Doctor Dinger is also empowered to eliminate a participant from the competition at any time for any inappropriate conduct.  The total number of Dingers by each participant will be tallied during the Qualifying Round.

 The DQ Survivor Round
The participants with the five highest Dinger totals (plus ties) from each circuit will advance to the Dairy Queen
® Survivor Round based on the total number of Dingers hit during the DQ Qualifier Round. The same person may not qualify twice for the Survivor Round (i.e., if a participant enters more than once in the Qualifier round, his top score is used for qualifying purposes).  The DQ Survivor Round will begin at 4:30 pm on Saturday evening on Field 2.  The round will begin by resolving ties through a process known as “The Instant DQ”.   Each participant that ties for the 5th spot will take one swing.  The first participant to hit an unanswered Dinger in The Instant DQ round will qualify for the DQ Survivor Round.

Each DQ Survivor Round participant will receive another ten outs.  They will hit according to seed (the qualifier with the most Dingers hitting last).  The top three participants will advance to the DQ Championship Round.  All ties will be resolved again through The Instant DQ in the DQ Survivor Round (i.e., only three people will advance from each circuit to the Championship Round).

 The DQ Circuit Championship Round
At 8:00 pm on Saturday evening, the Dairy Queen
® Dinger Derby will host the Championship Round as one participant from each circuit will earn the right to be called a Dairy Queen® Dinger Duke.  Each participant in the Dairy Queen® Championship Round will receive another ten outs (they will hit according to seeding, with the participant hitting the most Dingers in the DQ Survivor Round hitting last).  The participant with the most Dingers in a circuit will be crowned a Dairy Queen® Dinger Duke and will receive a coupon for a free Blizzard courtesy of Dairy Queen® of Ephrata.

The DQ Dinger King Round
Each DQ Dinger Duke will receive an additional ten outs.  The Duke with the most dingers will be crowned the Dairy Queen® Dinger King and will receive another coupon for a free Blizzard from Dairy Queen® of Ephrata.
