ebruary 21st-23rd,
2003 marked the tenth anniversary of the Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball
Tournament in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. The annual tournament, sponsored by
the Ephrata Baseball Booster Club, has been held since 1994 and has been
a fundraiser for the Ephrata High School Baseball Program and youth
baseball in Ephrata.
In the fall of 1993, a gentleman from western PA was discussing how his
son’s high school baseball team ran a wiffle ball tournament for the youth
in their district. A phone call was made to the head coach of the school
who generously sent a packet of information describing how their
tournament worked. The wheels started to turn and an Ephrata coach and an
Ephrata alumnus got together one night during the holidays to brainstorm
what needed to be done to start an Ephrata indoor wiffle ball tournament.
Rules were written, field layouts were created, T-shirts designed, and
advertising was planned. The funds would be raised for the EHS Baseball
Booster Club and the Booster Club would be the sponsors.
The first tournament was held in early spring of 1994. Three teams from
the Senior Circuit (grades 9-12) and six teams from the Junior Circuit
(grades 6-8) participated. They had a blast! However, the days prior to
the tournament caused some stress with the planners. There was so much
snow and ice on the school’s gym roof that it sagged and the divider doors
that were to separate the two fields could not be closed. To make matters
worse, we did not even know if we were having school that Friday, which
would have meant a cancellation of the tournament. We did have school, we
did have the tournament and we found out by leaving the doors open (which
would not have been done if not for the circumstances) that the fields did
not interfere with one another and the fans could watch all the action
from one place. The Booster Club provided a snack bar and the lobby was
setup for eating and chatting.
As the years have passed, the rules have been "tweeked" because of
suggestions from players and spectators. Each year more and more teams buy
or create their own uniforms. A third playing venue had to be introduced
in 2001 in the former Junior High School gym to accommodate the increased
participation. The gym lobby has become an archive of past tournament
history with standings, articles and box scores for the delight of the
fans. Also, a TV and VCR provide baseball highlights for those taking a
break. The Booster Club snack bar now includes breakfast, lunch and dinner
items, as well as a variety of Ephrata Mounts Baseball merchandise. The
2003 Tournament was the 10th anniversary of the event and there were a
total of 17 teams, second only in total teams to the 18-team field in
2001. Each year one hundred plus students take part, dozens of volunteers
umpire and keep score, and hundreds of people come out to watch the
"Indoor War," which has become a highly anticipated community event. The
tournament even has its own web site featured on mountshardball.com, the
official web site of Ephrata Mounts Baseball. Past champions, photo
galleries, viewer’s polls, and tournament rules are all accessible online.
Also in 2003, the tournament organizers applied for written consent from
The Wiffle Ball, Inc. to use the Wiffle® name in association with the
tournament and its reference on the web site. The Wiffle Ball, Inc.
has graciously agreed to allow the use of the Wiffle® name in conjunction
with the tournament, making its products the "Official Bat and Ball" of
the Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament.
