Another Pedestrian
Effort!
The Peds win their second consecutive Senior Circuit
Title, Tate 'n Tots win Junior Circuit, Just Wiff It!
claims Rookie crown
The 18th edition of the
Indoor War has come and gone, and in its wake, three
teams own the proud honor of being called champions of
their respective circuits, while hundreds of folks can
stake claim to witnessing another hugely successful
fundraiser for the Ephrata baseball program.
The Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament wrapped
up its two-day event at the Ephrata Middle School on
Saturday evening by crowning three of its 33 members as
champions in what was the culmination of three
double-elimination brackets that started Friday evening
and lasted for the better part of Saturday. Once again,
many records were broken; including admissions,
concession sales, and skills challenge registrations,
making this the largest fundraiser in the history of the
event for the Ephrata Baseball Association. "As always,
we owe a great big thank you to a core of volunteers who
spent a lot of time and energy over the past few weeks
bringing this entire event together," remarked Mounts
Head Coach Adrian Shelley. "This was one of the most
seamlessly organized events we've ever had."
Senior Circuit Recap
Deja Vu All Over Again
Onto recapping the action, as The Pedestrians became
only the third team in Senior Circuit history to win
consecutive championships by again defeating the 2009
champs, The Redbirds, this time by a score of 1-0.
Similar to a year ago, The Redbirds had sent The
Pedestrians into the non-winner’s bracket earlier in the
day; however, The Pedestrians would take care of
business in the winner-takes-all finals format by
tossing a four-pitcher perfect game that included
striking out every Redbird they faced. A quick run in
the top of the first inning proved to be allof the
excitement the game would provide as Jordan Eberly poked
a double to right field to plate the game's only run.
Eberly was also the Pedestrians’ ace, and was
practically untouchable throughout the tourney, earning
the circuit’s Cy Young, while teammate Chris Fassnacht
earned the Senior Circuit Most Valuable Player Award.
Junior Circuit Recap
Keller's Walk-off Tater Wins it for Tate 'n Tots
In the Junior Circuit (middle school division), there
was no shortage of drama as the final game came down to
the final at bat. Following a 4-4 stalemate through
five innings that saw the Tate 'n Tots come from four
down to tie the game, both teams had to select one
player to pitch to his own team in a "hit-off" that is
one of the unique features of the Indoor War. The Above
Average Joe's were able to plate three runs in the
top half of the inning putting all of the pressure on
the Tots. However, after scoring an early run, it came
down to Drew Keller at the plate with two Tots on.
Keller, who needed at least a double to score both
runners and send the game another extra frame, chose to
finish things off with one swing of the bat, as he
drilled his teammate's offering into the left field
bleachers for a dramatic walk-off home run and Junior
Circuit Championship. Keller's clutch performance
earned him MVP honors, while teammate Kole Adams was
named Cy Young.
Rookie Circuit Recap
Just Wiff It! Wins First Title
Finally, in the Rookie Circuit
(elementary division), the all-Ephrata team of Just Wiff
It! added their fair share of excitement to the event,
starting what would become the first of three one-run
final games. Trailing by two runs midway through the
contest, JWI rallied to tie the score when Logan
Molchany jacked a two-run homer into the bleachers.
That 2-2 score seemed in jeopardy in the bottom of the
fifth, when the Backyard Boys from Lititz, who finished
runners-up a year ago, led off their home half of the
frame with a triple. However, Rookie Circuit Cy Young
winner Zach McGillan pitched his way out of the jam
fanning three consecutive Boys to send the game into the
"hit-off". After JWI pushed two across to go ahead 4-2,
the Backyarders threatened by quickly plating a run,
however, that proved to be all they could manage as
their final swing found the ceiling, earning JWI the
Rookie crown. Sam Cable of Just Wiff It! was crowned
Most Valuable Player for his offensive performance
throughout the afternoon.
Thank you!
"On behalf of the entire Ephrata baseball community, I'd
like to recognize everyone who played a role, large or
small, in helping produce another fantastic Wiffle Ball
weekend. From the EBA volunteers, the district's
custodial staff, our high school players and coaches, to
everyone in the community who really have no affiliation
to the program, but choose to chip in; a thank you may
not be enough. However, the smiles and memories that
you have created for each kid who participated in this
event, whether they're from Ephrata, or Lititz, or
Philadelphia . . . those are the true expressions of
gratitude. All I can do is offer a humble "thanks" and
a sincere tip of my cap for the commitment and
dedication you invested in running another outstanding
Wiffle Ball event for our community. See you at the
ballpark! Go Mounts!" - Adrian Shelley
