DYNASTY
COMPLETE!
Saturday format brings out the luck of the Irish as
the Fightin's win an unprecedented third straight Senior
Circuit Title to close out the 15th Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball
Tournament
February 25, 2008
Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could stop the 15th
edition of the Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament from
taking place as participants, spectators, and tournament organizers
showed that flexibility and determination can prevail as the annual
Wiffle Ball tournament was adapted into a single-day event this past
Saturday with 35 teams participating across three divisions. The
annual high school baseball fundraiser, sponsored jointly by the
Ephrata High School Baseball Boosters and the Ephrata Baseball
Association, once again provided plenty of intense competition, lots
of fun-filled moments, and crowned three teams with Circuit
Championships in the Rookie, Junior, and Senior Circuits.
When Friday’s school cancellation forced Day One of the tournament
to be postponed into an all-day double-elimination event on
Saturday, tournament organizers chose to shorten the length of each
contest into three-inning games. That rule modification
surprisingly proved to provide lots of excitement across all three
circuits and also proved to be an equalizer throughout the day. The
dominant Senior Circuit team of all-senior Fightin’ Irish needed an
extra frame to win their very first game of the day and remained
unblemished straight through the finals to earn the tournament’s
first-ever “three-peat” Senior Circuit Championship, defeating The
Backyard Bandits 7-6 in another extra frame tilt. Irish team
member Anthony Rinaldi earned the Most Valuable Player honor in his
age bracket, hitting three home runs during the event, while
Backyard Bandit Austin Landis collected the consolation prize of Cy
Young winner. Also noteworthy was the Mathletes, who once again
showed that looks are everything by claiming yet another Best
Uniforms Award.
After getting
knocked into the loser’s bracket early in the Junior Circuit and
barely defeating Da Runs in extra innings, the Duct Tape Warriors
made it two-in-a-row by regrouping and defeating the surprisingly
strong 6th grade MVP’s in the finals on Saturday night.
Team captain Ryan Brubaker won the Most Valuable Player award for
the Duct Tape gang while teammate Andre Hoover grabbed the Cy Young
Award. And, although they were there to play Wiffle Ball, the
Disney Princesses and The Hippies made fashion the name of the game
by being crowned co-winners for the Best Uniforms of the Junior
Circuit.
Earlier on in the
evening in the Rookie Circuit, The Phillies and the Future Mounts
locked horns in a battle of unbeatens to decide the elementary
division’s championship game. The out-of-town Phillies broke things
open in the first few frames, eventually winning 9-3 to claim their
first-ever crown. Kole Adams of the Phils captured MVP honors,
while Matt McGillan earned the Cy Young representing the Future
Mounts.
Thank you!
The Ephrata High School
Baseball program, its boosters, and the Ephrata Baseball Association
would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the 2008
Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament another huge success,
despite having to alter, modify, and change on the go due to
inclement weather. After going to Plan B, the single-day event went
without a hitch, a testament to the positive spirit and enthusiasm
that has made this tournament a true community event.
Special thanks goes to the Ephrata Area School District for allowing
us to once again host the event, the Ephrata Middle School custodial
and food service staff for their flexibility in assisting with
equipment, set up, and clean up, and all of the volunteers who
umpired, kept score, ran concessions and helped run a flawless “66
games-in-one-day event”. We would also like to thank Dairy Queen of
Ephrata for their generosity in providing our participants with
coupons for hitting home runs and competing. Lastly, we would like
to thank the spectators and participants for another wonderful
tournament. This year’s event will be remembered as one that
challenged everyone’s ability to remain flexible and positive –
qualities that make our community a great place to live. Here’s to
another fifteen years of the Indoor War!
On behalf of the entire Mounts baseball program, thank you!
Sincerely,
Adrian Shelley

SHAMROCKED!
Fightin' Irish coast
through the Senior Circuit undefeated to claim second consecutive
title and fourth team championship in five years
This year’s Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament turned about
to be the most successful event in the 14-year history of the
Ephrata High School baseball program’s fundraiser as 31 teams
competed over a 30-hour period, culminating in three circuit
championships, a Dairy Queen Dinger Derby finale, and the Super
“Sonic” Speed Pitch championship.
This year the Rookie Circuit was comprised of 5 teams with
participants, 5th grade and under, battling it out
throughout the day on Saturday. The Lemonheads cruised through the
winner’s bracket and met up with Kole’s Krushers in the finals. The
championship game lived up to its billing by going into extra
innings with the Lemonheads prevailing with a score of 6 – 5.
The Junior Circuit involved 15 teams from grades 6th – 8th.
After getting knocked into the loser’s bracket early Saturday
morning, the Duct Tape Warriors fought game after game and met up
with the undefeated Jedi Squirrels in the finals. Again, the
championship game provided the crowd with excitement as the Duct
Tape Warriors came back from a one-run deficit, scoring two runs in
the bottom of the fifth to take home the hardware.
In the grand
finale, the Senior Circuit, comprised of 11 teams in grades 9-12,
finished in exciting fashion. As in previous years, the majority of
the games were decided by pitching. “Quality pitching proved
essential once again,” stated circuit MVP Matt Woolley, of the
championship Fightin’ Irish. With pitching being the main formula
for success, it was only fitting for the championship game to come
down to arguably the two best pitching staffs in the tourney. The
Senior Circuit final proved to be a pitching duel right from the
start and was decided in the pivotal fourth inning as the Irish
scored all four of their runs, paced by Woolley’s RBI triple, to
defeat the Backyard Bandits 4-2 for the team’s second consecutive
championship and fourth in five years. Morgan Bartholomew was
crowned Cy Young winner for his outstanding pitching, while teammate
Woolley earned his first ever MVP.
In the Dairy Queen Dinger Derby, Logan Rutt claimed the Rookie
Circuit Dinger Duke, Brok Martin earned the Junior Circuit Duke,
Steve Tretter was crowned the Senior Circuit Dinger Duke, and Jim
Martin, Brok’s father, won the Adult Circuit event. In the DQ
Dinger King finals, Brok and Steve slammed six home runs apiece,
before the younger Martin edged out Tretter in a tie-breaker to
become the youngest Dinger Derby King in the 3-year history of the
event.
Also earning an award for the second consecutive year was the
sophomore team of girls, the Beach Bums, who once again claimed the
award for Best Uniforms in the tournament, clad in their matching
team apparel, including beach chairs, sunglasses, and beach towels.
”Once again, the tournament proved to be a huge success,” commented
head baseball coach Adrian Shelley. “We had an incredible turnout
on both days of the event and the participants provided the
spectators with a number of memorable moments. Each of the winning
teams and event champions has bragging rights for the next year and
I’m sure there are already a few teams who are planning on
dethroning the Fightin’ Irish from their two-year reign over the
Senior Circuit.” |

off the Irish
Can anyone
dethrone last year's Senior Circuit Champs? Clan of juniors
have eyes set on back-to-back titles as the 14th annual Indoor War
begins February 23rd
February 13, 2007
Teams are registering and brackets are starting to take shape as the
official registration deadline for the 14th
annual Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament, February 23-24th
at the Ephrata Middle School, draws near. Teams in the
Rookie, Junior, and Senior Circuit must register their team on or
before February 16th to secure their opportunity to win bragging
rights in their respective age group.
This year's Indoor War will once again feature catered Texas-style
barbecue by Lil' Bevo's BBQ, the Dairy Queen Dinger Derby, a home
run hitting contest, and the High Heat Challenge, a Wiffle® Ball
speed pitch. The Dinger Derby and High Heat Challenge offer team
members, as well as general participants without a team, a chance at
showcasing some individual talent. Champions of both events will
be crowned between the final round games of all three circuits,
beginning at 6 PM on Saturday evening, in what has become known as
“Championship Saturday.” Along with the crowning of the DQ Dinger
Dukes and the Dinger King, the tournament committee will also
announce the winner of the coveted “Best Uniforms Award” which is
given to the one team that sports the most creative, colorful, and
coordinating team uniform. |

Irish Eyes Are
Smilin'
Team of sophomores claim
top prize as 13th edition of Indoor War proves memorable
February 26, 2006
Another Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball
Tournament has come to an end leaving participants, spectators, and
tournament organizers with another memory-filled weekend of Wiffle
Ball action. The annual high school baseball fundraiser, sponsored
jointly by the Ephrata High School Baseball Boosters and the Ephrata
Baseball Association, once again provided plenty of intense
competition, lots of fun-filled moments, and crowned three teams
with Circuit Championships and four home run hitters with the
coveted title of Dairy Queen Dinger Duke. Headlining the winners
was the all-sophomore team, the Fightin’ Irish, who earned their
first Senior Circuit Championship by defeating S.W.A.T. 3-1 in the
title game. Of note, this same team, formerly known as The Dawgs,
also won back-to-back Junior Circuit Titles in 2003 and 2004. In
the Junior Circuit, Extreme Caution breezed through their bracket to
defeat The Pedestrians in the championship game and earn the Junior
Circuit title. And in the Rookie Circuit, the All Pros were too
much for their fellow fourth and fifth grade competitors, defeating
the Garden Spot Bulldogs from the Cocalico School District in the
finals. In all, three teams from other school districts, including
two from Cocalico and one from Governor Mifflin, participated in
this year’s event. “It was great to see interest from outside of
our school district compete in our weekend event,” commented Mounts
Head Coach Adrian Shelley. “Hopefully, their participation will
encourage others to enter teams into next year’s event.”
The 2006 Dairy Queen Dinger Derby turned into a family affair as a
pair of brothers, Brok and Reid Martin, were crowned the Junior and
Senior Circuit Dinger Dukes, while eight-year old Nate Fassnacht was
crowned the Rookie Circuit Dinger Duke. His father, Dave Fassnacht,
earned the title of Adult Circuit Dinger Duke and then stole the
show by becoming the grand champion, the DQ Dinger King, edging last
year’s King, Doug Erb, by one home run.
In the Haller High Heat Challenge, the
Wiffle Ball speed pitch competition, Chad Summers from Governor
Mifflin earned the Rookie Circuit title, while local hurler Jake
Rutt claimed the Junior Circuit crown. Mounts pitcher Zac Schnader
threw some fast plastic at 95 mph to win the Senior Circuit award,
and ex-Mount Justin Homsher took home the Adult Circuit title.
For the second year
in a row, the same group earned the title of Best Uniforms for the
tournament, however, this year they did not have to share it. The
Drama Queens, representing the Senior Circuit, came complete with
matching accessories and their very own decorated “throne” that
provided comfort and style for their on-deck hitter, as the
all-female team was a unanimous decision for the award.
“This was another
great event and one that our high school program is very proud to
host,” remarked Coach Shelley. “Many thanks goes out to all of the
folks behind the scenes that made this event run smoothly and to the
hundreds of spectators and participants who contributed to another
successful fundraiser.”
Senior Circuit
Recap
When the all-sophomore team, Fightin' Irish, saw the 2006 Senior
Circuit Bracket last week, they began charting a course toward
knocking off the reigning circuit champions, the High Rollers.
They figured on meeting last year's champs either in the semifinals
or the finals, and knew they would have to bring their "A" game if
they were to pull off the upset. That opportunity would never
materialize. The High Rollers were bounced before the
semifinals, while the Irish, remained unbeaten and coasted to
the finals to await S.W.A.T. or the upstart freshmen team, Team
Sportsmanship, who gave the Rollers an unexpected early exit.
S.W.A.T. eventually ended the Cinderella run by the freshmen to set
up a winner-takes-all final with the Fightin' Irish, who had beaten
them earlier in the tournament in a slugfest. The only thing
that changed in the finals was the method in which the Irish used to
dismantle S.W.A.T. Baseball aficionados boast that pitching
wins championships. The Fightin' Irish would prove that the
same holds true in Wiffle Ball as the sophomores would claim their
first Senior Circuit title, and third Indoor War title, by defeating
S.W.A.T. 3-1. Of note, this same group, formerly known as The
Dawgs, won back-to-back Junior Circuit titles in 2003 and 2004.
"This group has collected quite a bit of hardware the past few
years," commented Mounts Head Coach Adrian Shelley. "They are,
without question, one of the most successful teams in the history of
our 13-year tournament." Despite losing efforts by both of
their teams, Derek Sipe of the High Rollers claimed the Cy Young
Award in the Senior Circuit, while S.W.A.T. member Reid Martin
earned MVP honors. |

2006 Wiffle Ballers Prepare for Action!
Indoor
War shortened to a two-day event
February 20, 2006
The
rosters are in, the brackets are set, and teams of all ages are
gearing up for another edition of the Indoor War. This Friday and
Saturday at the Ephrata Middle School gymnasium, the 13th
annual Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament is set to once
again open its doors to provide local Wiffle® ball enthusiasts from
the Rookie, Junior, Senior and Adult Circuits the opportunity to
battle it out to become champions. This year, the annual Ephrata
baseball fundraiser is also welcoming back the Dairy Queen Dinger
Derby, a home run hitting contest, and the Haller High Heat
Challenge, a Wiffle® Ball speed pitch. Both events offer team
members, as well as participants without a team, a chance at
showcasing some individual talent. Also, new to the event is the
opportunity to sit down to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. A
catered barbecue pit will offer participants, spectators, and anyone
interested in a carry-out option, authentic slow-smoked barbecue.
If you’re not interested in attending the event, take out will be
available at the old gymnasium entrance behind the school.
If you can make it, tournament officials suggest grabbing a seat for
“Championship Saturday.” From 6 – 10 PM, the DQ Dinger Derby and
Haller High Heat Finals, as well as all four circuit championship
games will be featured on the same court. “Saturday night should be
electric,” commented Ephrata Mounts head baseball coach Adrian
Shelley. “Championship Saturday represents the culmination of some
great wiffle ball action and is always entertaining to watch. There
are plenty of smiles and handshakes when it’s all said and done and
that makes everyone’s work behind the scenes worthwhile.” Officials
plan to waive the $2 adult, $1 student daily admission fee once
“Championship Saturday” begins at 6:00 PM. |

Wiffle Ball
Tournament Extends Team Entry Deadline
February 7, 2006
The 13th annual Ephrata
Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament, hosted jointly by the Ephrata
High School Baseball Booster Club and the Ephrata Baseball
Association, is quickly approaching and time is running out to
register your team to compete in this year’s event. With that in
mind, tournament organizers have decided to provide interested teams
and would-be participants with an extra week to turn in rosters and
to submit entry fees so that as many teams as possible can compete
in the annual high school baseball fundraiser. “Our primary concern
is that no one gets turned away,” commented Ephrata Mounts baseball
coach Adrian Shelley. “We’ve gotten a lot of team entries in the
past few days and have spoken to some people who have said that they
could use an extra day or two to pull a team together. So, we’re
postponing the deadline for all four circuits until Friday, February
17th at 9:00 pm. Hopefully, the added time gives
everyone who wants to, a chance to get involved.” To date, the
Junior Circuit and Rookie Circuit are creating the most noise, with
several teams from outside the district competing in the event.
“We’re really excited that a few neighboring communities are
participating,” remarked Coach Shelley. “I think it would be great
to see an Ephrata vs. Cocalico championship game. Just having these
teams involved adds to the popularity, intensity and spirit of the
Indoor War.”
Returning to the tournament schedule is last year’s huge success,
the 2nd annual Dairy Queen Dinger Derby, a home run
hitting contest sponsored by Dairy Queen of Ephrata that promises to
generate a lot of excitement. DQ Derby participants from the
Rookie, Junior, Senior, and Adult Divisions will be competing to see
who will break some of last year’s Derby records, and to find out
who will be crowned this year’s Dinger Duke. Another excited
feature is the addition of a catered barbecue pit that will featured
authentic slow-smoked barbecue. Combined with the traditional
concession stand, this added feature will now offer players and
spectators with a choice of light fare or $10 sit-down barbecue
platters.
A number of other activities are also being planned to supplement
the main attraction, the three-day Wiffle Ball Tournament, which
will take place on February 24-26th at the Ephrata Middle
School. This year’s tournament currently has openings for team
entry in the Rookie Circuit (grades 4-5), the Junior Circuit (grades
6-8), the Senior Circuit (grades 9-12), and the Adult Circuit (ages
18 and older). Deadline for team entries is Friday, February 17th,
2006. |

2006 Wiffle Ball Tournament Weekend
has makings of a Funfest
February 1, 2006
The 13th annual Ephrata Invitational Wiffle Ball
Tournament, hosted jointly by the Ephrata High School Baseball
Booster Club and the Ephrata Baseball Association, is less than a
month away and tournament organizers are preparing to once again
provide local citizens with some intense Wiffle Ball action, as well
as a variety of activities, as the annual baseball fundraiser revs
up for another full weekend of non-stop fun. “Each year we strive
to make the tournament more entertaining and exciting for everyone
involved. This year will be no different,” commented first-year
tournament commissioner Mike Linn.
Headlining this
year’s Indoor War are a few new wrinkles, including a catered
barbecue pit that will featured authentic slow-smoked barbecue.
Combined with the traditional concession stand, this added feature
will now offer players and spectators with a choice of light fare or
$10 sit-down barbecue platters. Also being introduced this year, is
a spectator’s entrance fee, designed to off-set the rising costs of
hosting, what has become, an ever-growing and highly popular
community event. Adult spectators can choose between paying a $2
daily fee, a $5 all-weekend pass, or the $10 family pass, which
includes two adults and all children. Students in K-12 grades can
choose between a $1 daily fee or a $3 all-weekend pass. Also new
this year, is the first-ever cash prize being offered to a
tournament circuit champion. In the Adult Circuit, not only is a
title up for grabs, but so is the opportunity to win $1,000. Entry
into this bracket, for players ages 18 and over, will cost a team
$200, however at stake, is what tournament officials are calling
“one of the largest cash prizes being offered to Wiffle Ball
competitors on the East Coast.”
Returning to the
tournament schedule is last year’s huge success, the 2nd
annual Dairy Queen Dinger Derby, a home run hitting contest
sponsored by Dairy Queen of Ephrata that promises to generate a lot
of excitement. Derby participants from the Rookie, Junior, Senior,
and Adult Divisions will be competing to see who will break some of
last year’s Derby records, and to find out who will be crowned this
year’s Dinger Duke.
A number of other
activities are also being planned to supplement the main attraction,
the three-day Wiffle Ball Tournament, which will take place on
February 24-26th at the Ephrata Middle School. This
year’s tournament currently has openings for team entry in the
Rookie Circuit (grades 4-5), the Junior Circuit (grades 6-8), the
Senior Circuit (grades 9-12), and the Adult Circuit (ages 18 and
older). |

Mounts Say "Thank
You!" For Making The Wiffle Ball Tournament A Complete Success
March 2, 2005
The
Ephrata Baseball Association, the Ephrata Baseball Booster Club, and the
Ephrata Mounts Baseball program would like to thank everyone, including a
special thanks to Dairy Queen of Ephrata and Leffler energy, for making
this year’s Indoor War another tremendous success. The Tournament
Committee would also like to thank the Ephrata Area School District for
use of the Ephrata Middle School facilities and the custodial crew for
their efforts in helping to make the event run smoothly. The committee
would also like to extend a big thank you to the many Ephrata Area Little
League volunteers who helped with umpiring and scorekeeping. The 60-plus
games played throughout the three-day event could not have happened
without your generous donation of time and energy.
Lastly,
the committee would like to thank the community for its overwhelming
participation in this year’s tournament. The four brackets, consisting of
35 teams, set a new Indoor War record, and records were shattered for
concessions sales and overall revenue. The 2005 Wiffle Ball Tournament
created many memories and entertaining moments and will once again be
remembered as a cherished community event.
Sincerely,

Wiffle®
Ball Players Battle it out as Indoor War Weekend Crowns Its
2005 Champions
DQ
Dinger King Doug Erb claims first-ever Dairy Queen Dinger Derby
Title
March 1, 2005
Just
when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the Ephrata
Invitational Wiffle Ball Tournament added two more featured
attractions, crowned four circuit champions, and entertained 35
teams and hundreds of spectators to make the 12th annual
Indoor War another spectacular community event and fund raiser for
the Ephrata High School Baseball program. “It just keeps getting
bigger and better,” commented Mounts head coach Adrian Shelley.
“The buzz following the tournament was anticipating what will be
added next year, who will be next year’s Dairy Queen Dinger King,
and what teams will make a run at winning circuit championships.
The energy that this event creates is outstanding. One team came up
to me after the end of the weekend and said, ‘Wait until you see our
uniforms next year. We will definitely win the Best Uniforms
Award.’ That’s what makes this event great. There is something
that appeals to everyone.”
The
event that drew the most attention this year was the first-ever
Dairy Queen Dinger Derby, a home run hitting contest held throughout
the weekend, that culminated in the crowning of four DQ Dinger Dukes
and the overall champion, the DQ Dinger King. The DQ Dinger Dukes;
Dan Neff of the Rookie Circuit, Willie Helander of the Junior
Circuit, Doug Erb of the Senior Circuit, and Jason Franks of the
Adult Circuit, outlasted the competition in an impressive display of
Wiffle Ball home run hitting prowess. Mounts senior Doug Erb then
edged out Rookie Circuit Duke Dan Neff as the overall champion
earning the bragging rights as the first-ever Dairy Queen Dinger
King. Noteworthy to the competition was seven-year-old Nate
Fassnacht, who belted out six “dingers” in the DQ Qualifier Round,
and sixth grader Mark Lowrie and eighth grader Willie Helander who
tied for the record for most dingers in a single round with eleven.
Also added to this year’s Indoor War was the Leffler Energy “High
Heat” Challenge, a Wiffle Ball speed pitch event that used a Jugs
Radar Gun and display. Four “High Heat” champions, Jake Rutt of the
Rookie Circuit, Zach Zimmerman of the Junior Circuit, Zac Schnader
of the Senior Circuit, and Jason Franks of the Adult Circuit, earned
awards for throwing the fastest pitch in their respective divisions.
Following team competition on Friday night and all-day Saturday, the
Rookie Circuit, Junior Circuit, and Senior Circuit concluded with
“Championship Saturday Night”, three circuit championship games that
wrapped around the finals of the Dairy Queen Dinger Derby. The
first of the three title bouts, the Rookie Circuit Championship,
saw The Rappers maintain their undefeated record through the
four-team double elimination bracket by defeating the Fulton
All-Stars 5-1 to win the Rookie Circuit crown. John Michel earned
Rookie Circuit Most Valuable Player, while Brian Neff earned Cy
Young Award honors.
In
the record-setting 15-team Junior Circuit bracket, the Super Heroes
avenged an opening round loss to the Pedestrians, to work their way
out of the Non-Winners Bracket and into the finals to face the
Ephrata Blackbirds. In an intense championship games, the Super
Heroes, led by Junior Circuit Co-MVP’s Doug Houtz and Austin Landis
and Cy Young Award winner Tyler Phillips, edged out the Blackbirds
by scoring the lone two runs of the game to earn middle school bragging rights.
It was all High Rollers in Championship Saturday Night’s main
event. After breezing through the Winners Bracket of the nine-team
high school field, the High Rollers took out S.W.A.T. 6-2 in the Senior
Circuit finals to earn their first-ever crown, avenging a
heartbreaking loss in last year’s championship game to the Rainbow
Connection. Alan Kliewer, substituting for injured team captain
Derek Sipe,
pulled off his best Lou Gehrig replacing Wally Pipp impersonation,
by hitting a grand slam and throwing a scoreless frame in the title
game to earn MVP honors. High Roller Kyle Sensenig, who worked a
perfect inning in the finals, earned the Cy Young Award.
And speaking of the defending champion Rainbow Connection, the group
of EHS graduates had to defend their title in a new circuit in 2005,
returning as participants of the seven-team Adult Circuit. And as
they did a year ago, the Connection, led by Adult Circuit Cy Young
winner Jason Franks, added another piece of hardware to their collection
by winning the 18 and older division in grand fashion. The
Connection remained undefeated in the tournament by defeating Busch
League 10-6 in the Circuit finals. Of note, ex-Mount and Busch League
member Brian Steffy earned the MVP Award for his impressive
offensive display in the all-day Sunday competition.
Other
awards handed out during the weekend included a number of coupons
for free Blizzards courtesy of Dairy Queen of Ephrata for Dinger
Derby participants that hit dingers off of the Dairy Queen banners
located in the power alleys. Also receiving coupons for Dairy Queen
were the Military Mamas, an all-female team from the Junior Circuit, and
the Cowgirls, and all-female team from the Senior Circuit. Both
teams were honored with “Best Uniforms Award” for their creativity
and overall uniformity with team apparel.

And What a War it Was! |
34 Teams
Play - 4 Circuit Champions are Crowned
February 29, 2004
As
the final pieces of tape were being peeled off the gymnasium floors,
and the last of the tournament lobby was being packed away on Sunday
evening, the event’s coordinators began to reflect on the great
success of the 2004 Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament.
The 11th annual tournament, which had begun at 6 PM on
Thursday night, had left many with a number of lasting memories and
had ushered in an estimated 1,000 plus spectators through the
Ephrata Middle School’s gymnasium doors over the course of the
four-day event. And when the dust finally settled, four teams out
of the 34 who participated were crowned circuit champions earning
Wiffle® Ball bragging rights for another year.
Tournament Commissioner Adrian Shelley and the entire tournament
committee would like to thank the many volunteers from the Ephrata
Baseball Booster Club and Friends of Ephrata Baseball who helped
sponsor and coordinate this highly successful community event. For

Senior Circuit finds the
Rainbow Connection |
February 29, 2004
The always-entertaining Senior Circuit featured a circuit-best ten
teams, and offered an exciting two-game championship between the
senior-led Rainbow Connection and the High Rollers. The Rainbow
Connection, who lost a 4-3 early round game to the High Rollers on
Friday evening, battled their way through the loser’s bracket to set
up a Saturday afternoon rematch against their rivals. Needing to
defeat the High Rollers twice for the title, the Rainbow Connection
won two consecutive close games 4-2 and 3-2 to be crowned Senior
Circuit Champs. Team Captain Ben Snyder, whose three-run homer in
the final game proved to be the difference maker, earned the
circuit’s MVP, while senior Ryan Grube was named Cy Young. |

MVP honors, while Jarred Miller, a former Senior Circuit Cy Young,
claimed the Adult Cy Young Award. The Redmen Reunion, down one game
to zero in their best-of-three semifinals, rebounded by winning four
of their five final games for the circuit title. |

Rookies Ring in
the Indoor War |
New Circuit ushers
in the 2004 Tournament
February 26, 2004
The 11th annual Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament has
begun! The 2004 Indoor War was officially rung in at 6:05 PM
on Thursday evening ushering in the inaugural year of the Rookie
Circuit, with four teams, consisting of 4th and 5th graders from the
Ephrata area, competing in a double-elimination tournament. And if
Thursday night's games are any indication of what kind of event this
year's tournament will be, then the spectators are in for a real
treat. All four games played on Thursday featured some great
pitching, sparkling defense, and a shut out. Each game was
highlighted by the winning team blanking the opponent where it
counts - on the scoreboard. And speaking of scoreboards, you asked
for it and you got it! The viewer's poll choice for features you
would most like to see added to the 2004 Indoor War was a Best
Uniforms Award and scoreboards. The Rookies became the first
circuit to play with manual "old-fashioned" scoreboards and even
welcomed in another added feature to this year's tournament - a
public address system. The new features are all a part of the new
consolidation efforts of the event's co-sponsors, the Ephrata
Baseball Booster Club and the Friends of Ephrata Baseball. On
Friday, the Junior and Senior Circuits begin first round action with
the Juniors beginning with four games starting at 5:00 PM. Both
circuits are featuring their largest brackets in Indoor War history,
with the Junior Circuit boasting a tournament record 13-team field.

Record-Breaker! |
200 Plus Players
Plan to Play
in 2004 Indoor War
The 11th annual Ephrata
Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament has already begun shattering
records! The 2004 Tournament Committee has announced that 35
teams in four circuits have committed to play in this year's
tournament making it by far, the largest event in the history of the
Indoor War. "We are extremely pleased with this year's
increased interest from the community," commented Tournament
Commissioner Adrian Shelley. "However, the increase in teams
has created a few planning and scheduling headaches in order for us
to keep the double-elimination format intact. Initially, we
had planned to launch the newly-formed Rookie Circuit on Thursday
evening, but with the jump in Junior Circuit teams from eight to
thirteen, half of the Juniors will need to start play on Thursday,
while three teams will earn first round byes. Byes will be
given to the first three teams that handed in their team fee and
registration form. We are also adding another playing venue to
the mix in order to accommodate the 78 games which will be played
during the course of the four-day event." Along with the
increase in Junior Circuit teams, the Senior Circuit is entering
more teams than the committee had anticipated, growing from eight to
eleven. Five of the eleven teams will earn a first round bye
to preserve the Senior's double-elimination format, with byes going
to the teams first to "officially" register. Along with the
Junior and Senior Circuit, the Rookie Circuit has three teams
entered in it, while the Adult Circuit will host its largest bracket
ever, announcing the commitment of eight teams to play on Saturday
and Sunday. |

Wiffle®
Ball Tournament Just a Weekend Away!
|
Rookie and Adult
Circuit Openings still Available
This Friday marks the
registration deadline for teams wishing to enter the 11th annual
Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament and with just a few
days remaining to sign up, teams are beginning to make plans to
become this year's Circuit Champion. The "Indoor War" began in 1994
with two circuits, a middle school and high school division, and
featured a total of nine teams. Everyone involved had a blast, and
immediately following the event, teams began preparations for the
following year. Eleven years later, the tournament's popularity has
outgrown its original two-circuit format, leading this year's
tournament committee to expand to a four-team circuit that features
room for 34 teams,
including engaging local fourth and fifth graders in the
newly-created Rookie Circuit. "We started considering expansion a
couple of years ago when we discovered that a lot of the adults
attending the event were asking if they could play," commented
tournament commissioner Adrian Shelley. "Since then, we've decided
to involve a younger group of participants, as well as include the
adults. We've only begun to scratch the surface in terms of
potential growth and development of this unique event. Who knows,
ten years from now we may be hosting a county-wide tournament."
The 2004 Tournament's first pitch will be thrown on Thursday,
February 26th, kicking off at 6:00 pm with the first-ever games of
the Rookie Circuit. On Friday at 6:15 pm, the traditional Junior and
Senior Circuit "first pitches" will be thrown and following the
championship games of the Rookie, Junior, and Senior Circuits on
Saturday afternoon, the Adult Circuit will begin with an approximate
6:00 pm "first pitch." With the Junior and Senior Circuits
completely filled, only Rookie and Adult teams can still register
for this year's tournament by registering online at
www.mountshardball or by calling 859-2466 by 9:00 PM this
Friday, February 20th. |

Wiffle®

Deadline is February 20th! |
All four
Tournament Circuits
are filling up fast
Circuits are filling up
fast for the 11th edition of the Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball
Tournament, February 26th-29th at the Ephrata Middle School, and the
registration deadline of February 20th is looming on the
horizon. The Tournament Committee has confirmed as of February
10th that four slots still remain for the Rookie Circuit, five for
the Junior Circuit, four for the Senior Circuit, and six for the
Adult Circuit. "We are adhering to a first come, first serve
policy," commented Tournament Commissioner Adrian Shelley. "I
would suggest that teams reserve their bracket spot by registering
online and then mail in their entry forms. In the past we have
had a lot of last minute registering, however this year, based on
the amount of phone calls and emails that have requested
registration information, teams that snooze will lose."
This year’s Indoor War is featuring a six-team Rookie Circuit for
players in 4th and 5th grades, an eight-team
Junior and Senior Circuit, and a twelve-team Adult Circuit. Entry
fees should be made payable to "Friends of Ephrata Baseball" and
should be mailed along with team rosters to: Indoor War
Headquarters, c/o Adrian Shelley, 312 Fulton St., Akron, PA 17501.

effort to expand the Adult Circuit, in an attempt to involve more
people in the event. Due to this expansion, the tournament's

Rookie and Adult
Circuits lead to tourney growth
It's basic economics.
Supply leads to demand. At least when it's a good thing. That's
what the founders of the
Ephrata Invitational
Wiffle® Ball Tournament have found out.
In 1994, the inaugural year of the "Indoor
War", nobody, not even the founders, knew whether or not the
tournament would be a success. Nine teams, six from the Junior
Circuit and three from the Senior Circuit, participated. However,
the cat was out of the bag. Everyone involved had a blast, and
immediately following the event, teams began preparations for the
following year. Eleven years later, the tournament's
popularity has outgrown its original two-circuit format, leading this year's
tournament committee to expand to a four-team circuit, including
engaging local fourth and fifth graders in the newly-created Rookie
Circuit. "We started considering expansion a couple of years ago

Bomb
Squad make it Back 2 Back |
Same team, new
name, repeat as Senior Champs
The Bomb Squad, who a year ago claimed the 2002 Senior Circuit
championship under the name Team Miracle WHIP, became the first team
to win back-to-back Ephrata Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament
Senior Circuit titles since the Ephrata River City Bandits repeated
in 1995 and '96. The Bomb Squad, returning six of seven
players from last year's championship team, took command of the
tournament on Friday night in one of the most memorable games in
tournament history when Circuit MVP Nick Crowther hit a two-out,
game-tying three homer in extra innings. The Bomb Squad
eventually won the game in the bottom of the ninth 6-5, beating the
legendary Redmen, well beyond the stroke of midnight. The
Bombers entered the Championship round of the double elimination
winner's bracket undefeated before dropping their first game of the
tournament, 3-0 to the "red hot" Dirty Half Dozen, who won their
third game in a row. The two teams met again in a
winner-take-all final, with the Bomb Squad decisively taking home
the title 7-3. Team captain Wes Lausch claimed the Co-Cy Young
Award along with fellow teammate Brian Steffy, making Lausch the
first-ever two-time winner of the coveted award. Lausch and
Bomb Squad teammate Dan Kulp were co-winners of the award in 2002 as
members of Team Miracle WHIP. |

The
Dawgs chase down Junior Crown |
7th Graders
Spoil Team Fuzz's Cinderella Bid
The Dawgs, formerly known
as the Lil' Dawgs, shed their old name and found new success, to
capture their first-ever Ephrata
Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament
Junior Circuit Title, defeating
Team Fuzz 6-0 in the championship game. Team Fuzz, comprised
solely of sixth graders, advanced to the title game following
several upsets, attempting to become the first sixth grade team to
ever win the Junior Title. However, the seventh grade Dawgs
proved to be too much in the end and were responsible for both of
Team Fuzz's losses in the double elimination tournament. The
Dawgs' Tommy Renko earned Junior Circuit MVP honors, while teammate
Matt Woolley collected the Cy Young Award. The Dawgs can now
attempt to become the first Junior Circuit team to successfully
defend their title since The All-Starz 1999-2000 championship run. |

New Rule Changes for
2003 |
Rules Committee
builds in more strategy and excitement
The Ephrata
Invitational Wiffle® Ball Tournament Rules Committee has announced
several new rule changes for the 10th annual Indoor War on February
21st-23rd at the Ephrata Middle School gymnasium. The rule
changes have been made to add more "baseball strategy" to the games
and to create an extra element of excitement. "The changes are
very player-friendly and are meant to provide each team with some
options throughout tournament play," commented Adrian Shelley, a
member of the Rules Committee. "I think you are going to see a
game or two decided on a sacrifice fly or an attempted stolen base,
and that is what makes each one of these rule changes extremely
interesting." Among the new rule changes for 2003 are double
plays, sacrifice flies, sacrifice bunts, squeeze plays, and stolen
bases. For a complete list of all of the 2003 rule changes
